Pet Name: Lytoo
My name is Lytoo, and I believe it's the custom to write down one's life story when one is very old.
I was born as a pretty red lupe in Y2, when Neopia was a very different place. Many places that we now know had not been discovered yet, and some places existed that now do not. Maraqua was my favourite place to be, and it was there that I met my wonderful first owner. We spent many happy days together in Neopia Central, Mystery Island and Faerieland, which was still in the clouds in those days.
However, I was young and I was a thrill seeker, and I wanted more than anything to go and explore the Haunted Woods. My owner told me "Lytoo, you don't want to go there. It's dangerous, and so many young Neopets who go there never return."
I brushed her off. Those were scary stories designed to scare young pets into staying in their neohomes after dark. And so, leaving my concerned family behind, I set off for the Haunted Woods.
I went there on foot (well, on paw) and when I arrived in the Haunted Woods, it was nightfall. I had been walking all day, and I was very tired and thirsty. I had just sat down to get my bearings when someone that I was sure I recognised from somewhere walked up to me and pulled a bottle from under his cloak.
"Are you thirsty, young lupe?"
I was. My owner had always warned me not to take food from strangers, but I was so desperately thirsty, so I took the bottle from him and drank it. It burned my mouth on the way down and I ran to the river, knowing that something wasn't right...
When I saw my reflection, I didn't look like myself anymore. My soft red fur was now dark purple and ragged, my face was a mask of metal, my pretty eyes glowed red. I had long claws on my paws and rows of spikes on my back.
I had never seen a mutant lupe before. Now I was one.
I didn't want to go home. I didn't want my owner to see what her favourite pet had become. More than that, I didn't want her to think that it was her fault for letting me go to the Haunted Woods all by myself.
And yet, my owner surprised me by only being happy to see me. It was better that I came back like this than never coming back at all, she said. I didn't know how to tell her how much that meant to me.
I decided to show my thankfulness instead of saying it, and I became the best lupe I knew how to be. I was my owner's friend, and her confidante, and her guard lupe. I was at her side for almost every day of my life.
Years later, my owner told me the news. She was moving away from Neopia. It wasn't that she didn't love me anymore- it was just time for her to move on, and I could not go with her. She did tell me one thing: she had made a friend in Neopia, another owner who was younger than her and who was going to need a guard lupe when her older friend was gone. It was arranged that I would go and live with the user Ehy.
On the night before I went to live with Ehy, my owner told me this:
"Lytoo, Ehy needs a strong lupe like you to take care of her. I know you'll be happy here, and I hope you won't forget me."
I moved in with Ehy, and quickly became the head of the family amongst all of her other pets. I never did forget my old owner, or my promise- that I was going to take care of Ehy like she used to. It's been so many years since then, and I've become very old now- though you might not think it as I've since been painted Darigan, keeping my red eyes- but I know I'll keep my promise forever.
It's funny, when Ehy is asked to tell the story of how I came to look after her, she seems to think that it happened the other way around and she's the one who takes care of me...
