There was silence in the lab as thick as the dust on the ancient tables. No-one had been there for years. And yet, in a dusty cage in the corner, an experiment still waited to be remembered by a forgetful world.

Someday I'll get out of here." The sentence directed at nobody, choked with tears, issued from the depths of the cage.

How did she come to be here?

Is it alive?" She heard a voice say.
I think so." came the reply. She didn't know what was happening. 'She' being the newly-born lupess. Tiny in the hands of a human, she did not move.

She was not a mutant then. Not yet. Her mother looked up and nosed at the pup in the human's hands. It had been a difficult birth. They thought the pup's chances of survival looked bleak.

Three pups; a young black and white lupe, a red female, younger still, and a blue and white cloud-patterned female, even younger, stood in the doorway, looking in.
Is our sister going to be okay?" The female said, wide-eyed.
I don't know." came the reply.
I don't know.

As it turned out, the pup DID survive. But then the news came.
A new lab had opened, and they were seeking 'runts of any litters, to enhance them and make them stronger.
As this little yet unnamed pup looked unlikely to survive as she was, the owner handed her over to the scientists.
The pup went into the lab. She was shut up in a cage and never saw her family again. Not 'til years later.

She only got the name Hareth from a scientist who was a fan of The Lord Of The Rings. Hareth is the name of a lesser-known character (check 'The book of unfinished tales' or whatever it is, she's listed as Haldir's sister), and the scientist thought it cruel that the lupess should go without a name. So one day, during feeding time, the scientist bent down to the scared pup and christened her Hareth.

The above you find written on crumbling scraps of paper. You put them down on the table you are leaning on. And look around. There's no-one in this lab. That's the reason you came in- if there was REALLY a mutant lupe hanging about you'd be out of there faster than anything. It would probably be vicious. You only broke into the old lab on the hill to get out of the rain.
No mutant lupey here." you say loudly to yourself. And from the silence, answering you, a navy-blue lupess with purple spines and a dull silver mask pads out and grins.
Oh, but there is.

My name is Hareth. Don't worry, I won't hurt you. I only want to tell you the rest of the story, and then I'll tell you about myself a bit more. That's what you came for, right?

Well yeah, me getting a name was the second major thing that happened to me in the lab (the first was me being transmogrified - my lovely yellow fur going dark blue and me growing my spines and getting 'that mutant look' about me) - and the last. For years I lay bored in the lab, and everyone left. And left me there.

I was alone. But I was not forgotten. As I grew from a pup into an adolescent, my rescuers were already on their way to save me.

This is a picture of me and Nero, drawn by his owner Riley. Nero is probably my best friend, and he didn't judge me by the way I look. Handsome fella, isn't he? Any lupess he ends up with should count herself very lucky.

My newest friend is called Aerus. Currently we're travelling together. Above is a picture of us together. That's when he first saw me, off in the distance.
