Items needed: White candle (non-dripless variety) Kunzite or blue agate Black marker with wide felt tip Lemon Balm Lemon oil (the kind used for furniture polish is fine) Cloth pouch Begin by completely coloring the candle black with the marker to symbolize the depression that presently encases you. Dragon energy is straightforward, so be careful for what you ask. You will receive it in the most direct way. Be very specific. Dragon logic is not human logic. Dragon moves from A to B, and simply removes anything in its way. For example: an acquaintance asked Dragon, without going into specifics, to change her living situation. As a result, a few days later there was a fire in her apartment building, and she was left without a place to live. That's a change, but it was not the one she wanted! We only know they were performed in Greece to honor Demeter and Persephone, and that those who participated in them were sworn to secrecy. Theories abound about what these mysteries were. Perhaps they included drama, dance, the retelling of the legend of Demeter and Persephone, divination, sacred marriage, sacrifice, or rituals of initiation. No one knows for sure what could possibly inspire such awe and devotion that no one ever betrayed the secrets. Whatever the truth, today is perfect to begin creating your own set of Eleusian mysteries. Three important aspects of a holistic life are connection to divinity, knowledge of the self, and positive action to improve everything around you. Give yourself quiet time. Meditate with your journal. Write about your connection to divinity. Write about yourself honestly, taking care to balance the positive and the negative. And write about how you can make your corner of the world the best it can be. Take time for the next nine days to write about these three topics every day, even if only for a few moments. On the Gregorian calendar this is the first day of autumn, but on the modern Celtic calendar it is midautumn. This holiday is more commonly known by its Welsh name Mabon. Mabon means "divine youth." It is the name of a mythic hunter hero whose story is told at this time of year. At the beginning of time, Mabon was born to the mother goddess Modron. That we only know his mother and not his father attests to the matriarchal lineage of the early Celts. The equinox marks the time when Mabon was three nights old and stolen from his crib. For the next three months, the heroes Cai and Bedwyr will search for him and ask all manner of birds and beasts for help. But, according to legend, it is only the salmon who can give them direction. On Yule, the heroes retrieve the divine child by freeing him from a prison in Gloucester. Like Apollo, Mabon is a hunter with a bow and a musician with a harp. He is a Sun god. Mabon represents the Sun that is waning in strength during this quarter of the year and that will begin to return only after the solstice. The waning of the light is frightening and depressing, and it is necessary for our own sake to use magic at this time to help in the quest for Mabon. The strongest act of magic that one can do at this time is to participate in the celebrations of the yearly cycle. As one integrates the yearly cycle deep into one's unconscious, serenity and confidence are gained. This is the peace that comes from knowing and accepting that the light will return when it is time. They make an old woman doll out of the last sheaves of grain from the harvest. The doll is kept safe through the winter so as to keep the spirit of the grain alive until replant-ing in the spring. What spirit do you need to sustain through the winter? Make a doll from bits of your garden, driftwood from the beach where you spend your summer, or maybe a cord from your sail. Wrap the items in the fabric, and sprinkle with five drops of the oil. As you assemble the amulet, think of a friend you wish to form a closer or deeper bond with. Have these items touching each other if possible. Stand before your altar for about five minutes every day for a week. See yourself in the vehicle of your choice. Take note of your sensations. How does it smell? What does it sound like? Do you feel excited? Liberated? Add plenty of chopped fresh garlic, and stir with magical intention. Cover and marinate one hour. Prepare a heart-shaped foil packet for each person by cutting two eight-inch hearts out of aluminum foil. Spoon a serving of vegetables onto one heart, and cover with the second heart. Voodoo queen Marie Laveau was often seen kneeling on the steps of St. Louis Cathedral in prayer with chili peppers in her mouth in order to find help in casting a particularly difficult spell. To make your own sacrifice in exchange for some helpful magic, take an object that you own. (The more precious to you, the better.) Bury or conceal it in your yard or near your front door. Many spells incorporate this practice. Visualization basically means imagining something intensely enough in your mind to manifest it into reality in some form. Here is an exercise to enhance your mental flexibility for future visualization. Start by sitting or lying still, and visualizing yourself descending a spiral staircase. Keep your hand on the outer wall as you go. You may find it helpful to imagine that twelve steps take you all the way around the inner pole, just as twelve hours complete the circle of a clock face. Most people find it very challenging to visualize spiraling like this in their mind while their body remains motionless. If you can't get it right the first time, don't despair. If the Moon is in any other position, this means poor weather will be coming shortly. Say this blessing upon the water: "Moonlight, bless this water, clean and pure. May it bring peace, and simple joy, to my home." Statues and paintings on papyrus of Nephthys and her son, Anubis, are easy to find as well. Pet a black dog today, sit by your altar, and sympathize with Nephthys' troubles—then tell her your troubles. Have a good cry if you need to. Write down dreams, stray thoughts, opinions of movies and TV shows you've seen. Sketch the tree outside your window or your cat as she sleeps. Most Witches keep a journal, called a Book of Shadows. In it, they records spells and everything else magical. On the Jewish calendar, today is the first day of the month Tishi in the year 5765 am. The am stands for Anno Mundi, "the year of the world." It is the year of the world because the Jewish calendar is calculated from what was believed to be the creation of the world, which occurred in the year 3761 b.c. of the Gregorian calendar. As with all days in the Jewish calendar, this day begins at sundown on the night before. This is the beginning of a ten-day period that commemorates the creation of the world. Today, a ram's horn, or shofar, is blown in the temple to call the people to a spiritual awakening. Over the next ten days, Jews are asked to review their behavior, atone for their sins, and renew their relationship with God. But on this day there is a feast and delicacies are eaten to assure luck through the New Year. The symbolic foods at this meal include spiced apples, honey, and challah—a bread made of eggs, sugar, and wheat. The apples and the challah are dipped in honey before they are eaten. O Oath Day Spell On the Roman calendar, today is the Nones of June. No legal action could take place on this day. Holidays were announced, and Jupiter was invoked in oaths. Today is a good day then to make oaths. Take thirty minutes or an hour, and write freely about what you like and don't like about your life. Look it over, and divide your list into two columns: the positive and the negative. In a perfect world, the positive column will be longer than the negative one, but don't fret if this is not true. Now, look at the negative column and make another list, this time turning each negative into a positive with suggested action. That is, if you write that your relationship to your parents is not good, add afterward that you intend to take them out to dinner sometime soon. Jupiter is the god of the sky. He protects the state, its laws, and he is associated with abundance and generosity. Light an orange candle. Read your original positive list. Then read the second list, where you turned negatives into positives. Open the door and request that any negative entities leave. Once you begin to sense that they are gone, invite good entities into your home through the open door. After deciding on your goal, sketch your desire on the canvas with a pencil. Do you want a new house? A car? A new love? The only limit is your imagination. Before you begin to paint, though, repeat this charm several times: "I work with the Moon and Sun. With the first stroke, this spell has begun. As the paint flows, my power grows. The wish in my heart, Is coming alive in my art." As the glass begins to clear, your face will appear. Be calm, and push aside all feelings of dread. You and your former self will now be eternally bound. It is also called the Day of Atonement, and is the most solemn and sacred festival of the Jewish calendar. During this period, one is asked to contemplate one's sins and seek reconciliation with God. We forgive our friends for any transgressions now. By forgiving others, we are forgiven by others and by God. It is through our relationship with each other that we establish our relationship with God. The kindness we show to each other is kindness to God. As in all religions, compassion is the virtue that leads away from egotism and toward spiritual development. The Yom Kippur service begins on the evening before, and after a nighttime break is resumed at sunrise and continues to sundown. During this entire period Jews are asked to fast and pray. To fast one must abstain from all food, drink, and adult activity. This is an ancient shamanic practice that allows one to diminish the physical world and experience the world of the spirit. For this month, one is asked to abstain from all food, drink, and adult activity on each day from sunup till sundown. In the evening there is a meal with family and friends, and one is encouraged to strengthen the bonds of friendship. During this month, Mohammed received his revelation. While walking in the wilderness near Mecca, the angel Gabriel came to him and showed him a book. Mohammed could not read. So, Gabriel read the book to him and helped him memorize it over the next ten days. This book was the Koran. During this month it is said that God determines the fate of the world for the next year. Although the Islamic New Year was already celebrated in February, this holiday fits the pattern of a new year's celebration. To understand this more fully, reread the spell on January 1. In the time between years there is always the threat that chaos will take over. Magic rituals are needed therefore to protect one from chaos and to reinstate order. The Chinese perceive the threat as coming from without and use fireworks for protection. Gather five mirrors, and place each at the five points of the pentagram. Put a tea light candle on top of each mirror. Light sage incense, and place a bowl of water infused with rosemary along with a sprig of the herb in the center of the pentagram. "Witches" in this case refers to malevolent magic-workers who would do harm to people. The Rowan trees have small red berries on them in the fall. The rowan berry shows a five-pointed star—a pentagram—which is an ancient protection symbol and a modern symbol of Witchcraft. Traditionally, pieces of the rowan tree were carried for protection. Women would wear a neck-lace made of rowan berries strung on red thread. S Salt Spilling Rituals Folklore says much about salt. It brings luck, prosperity, and protection in many cultures around the world. People warn against borrowing it, as it means borrowing trouble; or lending it, which means giving away one's luck—quite a contradictory bit of advice. Far more elaborate are the warnings and rituals involved in dealing with the spilling of salt, and what to do in such a case. Given the many uses of this element in spells, however, I find that in a magical household, the spilling of salt most often signifies nothing more dire than a hint to strengthen the wards protecting the place. If you happen to spill salt, don't worry; just speak a charm such as this: "Spill salt, spill luck! Sprinkle a bit around the room, And that will lift the coming gloom." On your altar, set an image of Ganesh, an offering of flowers, incense, coins, a green candle anointed with patchouli, a cauldron, and a sheet of new parchment. Write on the parchment: "What blocks my success melts away. What blocks my prosperity melts away. What blocks my happiness melts away." Continue to write this prayer, being mindful of the words until you run out of space. When you are finished, say: "Lord Ganesh, remove what blocks me from my success. Lord Ganesh, bless me." Burn the prayer sheet and incense, bury the coin, and enjoy the flowers. Poltergeists, especially, can create havoc in the home. In order to banish your troublesome ghosts, burn sage. This remedy comes from Native American tradition. Sage drives away unhappy ghosts but allows the pleasant ones to stay. When you feel an unnatural coldness on your skin, or just the creeps, ring bells or tsingsha cymbals, or blow a whistle. Spirits don't like high-pitched or discordant sounds. Put a broomstick over the transom each night, and a bottle of rum or vinegar at your back door. No ghost will venture past these. Don't bother calling an exorcist. If the spirit is not named Jack, he or she will then correct you. Watch your candle flame dip and dart. If the fire appears to go out and spikes up again, you have likely made spiritual contact. T Tartan Money Spell September means back-to-school or back-to-work after half-day Fridays, long weekends, and long vacations. For good luck, I always wore a tartan dress on the first day of school. The different colors symbolized the different elements woven together to create a whole. Since September is often a time of fresh starts, a fresh start for prosperity is often needed. You can try this prosperity spell using the good luck symbol of my childhood. Make a small pouch out of a piece of tartan. Use whatever tartan has meaning for you, either because it represents your clan or you simply like the colors. I tend to use one that is predominantly green, for prosperity. Put in a dollar coin, a whole nutmeg seed, and a sprig of rosemary in the bag. Bless and consecrate the bag in the name of your favorite prosperity deity, and carry it with you for three Moons. Be aware of new opportunities to manifest abundance. At the end of three months, throw the nutmeg seed and the rosemary into moving water. Put the coin and the bag in a safe place. W Waning Moon Spell Before the New Moon, it is wise to finish up old business and let go of any lingering encumbrances. After dark, gather a black candle, an egg, a magic marker, and clove of garlic. Light the candle, and visualize a circle of safety surrounding you.
