My Story..
The first day of spring started out clear and beautiful. The doeful songs of newborn Pteri's filled the fresh air and the smell of the flowers was sweet. Yet I couldn't have been more nervous. My mate was soon to give birth and I, as the new leader of my herd had to leave her side to inspect some suspicious commotion on the right side of the mountain. My two best stallions had reported seeing a silhouette of a gigantic beast near where we were headed and there were rumors of disappearances of certain herds in the area. No traces were left behind...just a gigantic X left in the ground at each hit.
So off I was. I left my expecting mate in the caring hands of the other mares and took all five of our stallions. If there was some truth to these rumors, I was going to need all the help I could get. It was going to take us 3 full days to get to the right side of the mountain because the terrain was rocky and Uni's aren't built for rocky terrain.
The first day was simple since we wouldn't reach the mountain base till the second day. But that night..I overheard a strange conversation between two of my best stallions. Kumah was the elder of the two. He had longer limbs and his pure white coat reflected his sharp intellect. He was a great stratigest. Ramah, the younger, was the opposite. He was smaller and more muscular, and didn't say much in the way of words. But he was faster and better suited for battle. His all black coat made him a very cunning foe at night. Together in battle, they were mind blowing.
Do you think this will work?" Ramah questioned gruffly.
Of course. We'll be able to take him down by the morning of the fourth day." Replied Kumah, menacingly.
Kumah and Ramah were brothers. And being two of my best stallions, I never questioned if what they were indeed talking about really was the mysterious "beast"...
At the end of the third day we had reached the left side of the mountain. We were all exhausted and parched. Just then, Ramah and Kumah trotted up to me with a strange look on their faces, but I was too concerned with thoughts of the beast and the welfare of the mares along with my mate back home to realize it. Kumah spoke.
Lord Ty, don't you think it would be wise to send the three other stallions to find a watering hole before the beast shows up? If we were to go into battle as we are now, tired and dehydrated, we would never win. I'd hate to see the look on your mare's face as she realizes you were never coming back. She'd be heart broken, my Lord.
I looked to the ground. Kumah was right. Before we planned on doing anything we needed to recuperate. I let out a tired sigh. Some rest and water tickled my ears.
You're right Kumah. You and Ramah stay here with me while the others find a good place to rest, and some water for us all.
Excellent decision Lord Ty. Shall we tell the others?
Yes," I replied wearily, "Thank you Kumah." I smiled slightly, "you're always thinking for me.
Well that is what I am for Lord Ty. I am one of your best." He smirked and bowed his head, then walked off. Ramah following closely behind...
The two announced the order to find some water and a safe haven. Not long after they had left, I found myself alone. Ramah and Kumah were no where. That is when I had began to become suspicious. I looked around, tucking my fear away. A voice called from behind me.
Looking for us...? Lord TYKETU?..." Ramah spoke gruffly with a primitive tone to his raspy voice.
As a matter of fact I was.." I replied suspiciously. I heard the graceful footing of Kumah's hooves on my other side.
Well well Lord Ty, it seems you've found us." He erupted in an evil giggle, much like a hyena. The two closed in on me. It all made sense now..and I had no place to run. Even if I had, Ramah was much faster with his smaller stature, and equal in strength.
ATTACK RAMAH!" Kumah hissed and immediately Ramah raced forward, horns lowered. I had no time to react..He pierced me easily. A warm trickle of blood slithered down my flank. Moments later the searing pain followed it. Ramah, horn still inside me, ripped it out grinning delightfully. I felt a stab in my back. The pain rushed through me, taking away my breath. I turned to see Kumah's horn bathed in my blood. I felt myself weakening. I wasn't even able to put up a fight as they continuously slashed me over and over. I finally fell to the ground, although I had been defeated long before that.
Before those 'faithful' stallions of yours return, I supposed I'll tell you of my ingenious little plan. You see it was all a simple setup. And YOU fell for it! Well I don't blame you. Who would expect their best to turn on them? Ahaha..No one can beat Ramah and I combined. We're invincible.." The fire in Kumah's eyes blazed delightfully.
"Why, Lord Ty, you look frightened. Certainly not of us I hope.." I watched him grin mockingly. I was afraid. Ramah and Kumah were to be feared, they were a deadly combination. The white stallion was right. I couldn't think of a way to beat them..maybe if all the local herds..
Yes, your eyes tell me what you're thinking. 'If we all stick together, we can beat them!' HA! Unlikely." He spat. "Why do you think Ramah and I got rid of those other herds? Did you really take me for an idiot?" He kicked me hard in the stomach. My legs curled in reaction. All he did was laugh. "What a leader...well you won't be leader for much longer. Ramah..strip him of his wings.." I hadn't even heard clearly what Kumah had said. I was too close to becoming unconscious. But I did hear the last thing Kumah said to me. I'll never forget it, for he made sure to lean nose to nose with me.
Your mare..is mine.." Blackness engulfed me.
I woke up feeling sharp pains all over. Not from my wounds though. I opened my eyes and immediately they stung. Searing heat baked my body, barely able to lift myself to my hooves. I opened my eyes once more, and looked around. I was in the middle of the desert. No lush grass or beautiful blue sky. For everything was sand all around. It bit painfully. 'A sandstorm..' I thought. I dragged myself along, trying to find some sort of refuge. As I trotted through the barren wasteland, I noticed I felt lighter. I stopped, almost afraid to glance over my shoulders. They were gone..my coat had streaks of blood. I paled knowing what must have gone on after I fainted. Wings were a part of a Uni's dignity..and without them, I was shamed. I felt sick just thinking about it. Moments later, I threw up.
A day or two passed, maybe even more, I'd lost track of time. I finally found a small grove I could crawl under to keep myself sheltered from the harsh climate.
After a few months I grew accustomed to the harsh climate and the lonely seclusion. Though I was surprised one day by a visitor from my herd. I had been wandering out in the desert looking for anything edible when I stumbled across him. His name was Silah. It was obvious he had traveled from afar and he collapsed at my hooves. Before he took his last breath he managed to tell me the recent events that had taken place. Kumah had coupled with my mate. I reflected back on those words he said..
Your mare..is mine..
Not only that but he had also told me she had gone willingly and was even part of my attempted execution. Apparently my herd thought I was dead, but Silah said he refused to believe I would perish in such a way, and could now die satisfied, knowing I had survived. My heart was crushed when he passed on. But then again aren't we all dying from the start?
