Help the Earth

I am Veronica (elmo_plum). I'm not someone who works for Greenpeace, or anything like that. In fact, I don't even work, well... not right now. I spent a lot of time making this petpage as good as it can be, fixing typos, rereading the grammer, but I wanted to do this to alert others of the increasing amount of dump that we put on this Earth. We live on this planet, and I for one, want to keep it clean and live-able for many many generations after me. I try to keep my apartment clean, as you prolly do. Try to think of Earth as your bigger, and slightly more crowded, apartment. Please, help us out by following the rules below. :)

1. Turn off the faucet when you're in the middle of brushing your teeth. There's only so much water on the Earth. Now some of you smarty-pants will say that there is more water than land, but most of it is salty. You cannot drink salty water. To clean it, it'd take millions of dollars and there isn't enough gold to back up that cash. I have been doing this since I was in the 3rd grade, and I suggest that you start making it a habit as well.

2. Close the refrigerator when you aren't getting something from it. It'd also help if you didn't rummage through it. Try to plan what you're going to get. This isn't always possible, since you don't memorize what's in your fridge but that's okay. Just close the door as soon as you get something out. I know that some of you like to pour out the juice/water and then put it back in before closing it (my sister does this), but try not to.

3. Don't flush the toilet a lot. Every flush wastes water. Of course you should flush when you need to, but don't flush for no reason. I know this sounds stupid, but it does help. If it's possible, instead of putting something in the toilet, like a napkin, put it in the wastebasket so you don't have to flush again.

4. Try not to buy eggs in styrofoam containers. Buy eggs in a cardboard container so it is possible to recycle it. If the only brand you like puts its eggs in styrofoam, then re-use it. Use it as a painting tray, put other eggs in it, or grow some small plants in each hole.

5. Use any extra water to water plants nearby (but don't flood them!). If you don't want to do this, then don't pour a lot of water in your cup when drinking. Instead, pour a little water and if you're still thirsty, pour some again. Believe me, this helps. Water is the #1 necessity for all living things, so we all need to be sure to save as much of it as possible.

6. Visit care2.com and thehungersite.com everyday. There are buttons in there that you can click to help out the rainforest, animals, cancer patients, and hungry children. Both sites seem very reliable and not a con. Besides, you don't have to donate anything, just click a link. If you are of age and can spare some cash, then by all means, donate to any environmental society. This is a good point for all you internet users because you don't even have to go outside and you aren't sacrificing anything.

7. Turn off any electronics when you aren't using it. My sister sometimes leaves the computer on when she isn't using it, so she can be idle on AIM. I absolutely hate this because you are wasting precious resources. When she does this, I always ask her if I can play and when she lets me, I just turn off the computer. Turn it off when you are leaving the house or going to sleep. Not only will this help Earth, but it can be really dangerous to you. The wires can get really hot when left on for hours, and it can start a fire so turn it off!

8. Recycle! This is a common one. It doesn't need to be fancy. Just take three plastic bags; one for garbage, one for paper, and one for bottles. There are rules to recycling. If you live in an apartment building, I'm sure you can get one from your super. Please recycle.

9. Re-use shopping bags. If you get plastic shopping bags, use them again as garbage bags. This also saves you money from buying the real garbage bags. If you get paper bags, you can use them as book covers. When I have to cover a book, those large paper bags make great ones, plus they're really easy to draw and decorate on. If you don't have to cover any textbooks, then you can use them for arts and crafts. If little kids come by, you can engage them in mask-making (make sure they can breathe in them!), or making origami with it.

10. Instead of buying disposable items, try using containers that can be used again (e.g. lunch boxes, plastic bottles). This saves you money and prevents trash buildup in the dumps. There's only so much room for garbage in this earth. I've heard they're going to put it in the oceans (if they haven't already). If they do, it'll get washed up on beaches and that "warm day at the beach" will be a smelly dirty one. Be smart, don't throw away things you can re-use.

11. Use both sides of paper, whenever possible. When you're done with it, recycle it or think of other uses for it. If you're using paper as jotting paper, then there's no need for it to be all pretty. This one is just common sense. When you have leftover paper in notebooks, don't throw it out. Re-use this as well. My mom did this with all of my old elementary and junior high school notebooks. Now, I have loads.

12. Water your lawns at night. This prevents evaporation so that you waste less water and your grass will be as healthy as ever. If you're going to do this, you can turn the sprinklers off at an earlier time. Just make sure you don't leave it on when you're sleeping, because then it'd be too long and it'll kill your grass.

13. Don't litter. As stated in #10, if you litter in the streets, it'll wash up into beaches. I read this one on a street sign. Hehe. Besides saving the earth, it'll just make your neighborhood way nicer. Plus, with less garbage, there'll probably be more plants and it'll help with the air you breathe in. If your parents let you, start a clean-up committee and clean up the parks, beaches, streets, etc. You'll feel really good about yourself.

14. Use normal doors, instead of automatic opening ones. A lot of the stores I've been to have both the automatic and normal one, so use the normal one when you can. Automatic can mean the sliding doors or the ones that revolve. Some of those are electronically powered too, instead of pushing it yourself. When given a choice, always use the normal one.

15. Try breaking open a window. When it gets warm in the room, try not turning on the air conditioner. If that's not possible, then close the window when the air conditioner is on. If both the window is open and the air conditioner is on, the cold air will just leave your house and it'll make no sense whatsoever. So make sure you follow this rule.

16. Use scissors to snip any 6-pack holders. I've read in a whole lot of books and pamphlets that small animals get stuck in them and die. If it's in so many texts, then it must be true though I have never witnessed it myself. These poor creatures will suffocate and you don't want to be a murderer, do you? Help out these animals, and make this rule a habit.

17. Buy rechargeable batteries. It saves you a whole lot of money, plus it'll cause less garbage. Once, I had rechargeable batteries that lasted me two whole months. It's fantastic, and it's a genius idea. Haha.

18. Whenever possible, walk. Try using a bus or subway when you can't. More than 100 people a day ride each one of them so it saves a lot of fuel and causes less pollution. Now I know it's much less comfortable, but it definitely helps. This isn't always possible because if you live in the suburbs, a bus or subway is several blocks away (or non-existing!). If you do ride in a car, make sure you wear a seatbelt to be safe.

19. Dyed paper pollutes, buy plain white toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, etc. All it does is make it pretty, so it's really no sacrifice. Plus, in my supermarket the plain white one is cheaper. I don't know if that's the same in yours, but yea... Anyway, do that too! Hehe.

20. Lastly, make people aware of how much danger the earth is in if we don't save it. Make signs, a webpage, or if you're really lazy, just put the button below in your petpage or user lookup.

Thanks!
