Central Neopian Library

In one of the dark, and dusty rooms of a half forgotten wing in the Central Neopian Library, you find, in your usual study spot, a large blue kougra sprawled on the lone sofa gracing the room. A sofa, which for the last twenty two Tuesdays from the time of 8:00pm to 11:00 has been yours. The usurper seems unaware of your presence, as he thumbs through an old English text on obscure medical ailments, but someone else isn't. Up pops a small brown head from the back of the couch, followed by the rest of a young nuk as she peers curiously at you, and whispers to the kougra, "Papa, there's someone here!!"

The kougra glances up, a mildly surprised look crossing his features. "Is it 8 already?" He asks her, frowning as she nods. "I am sorry about that," he says, turning to you. "You must be khestrel. The librarian warned me that someone usually uses this room at this time on Tuesdays, but I thought I would be out of your way before then. Let me just clean up, and I will leave you to your studying." He begins quickly gathering up his books, obviously embarrassed by his loosing track of time, and stacking them on a cart next to the shelf.

You study him as he goes about his task, and begin to fancy: he looks rather familiar. "We haven't me before, have we?" You ask. "It's just that I have the strangest feeling I have seen your face before."

He smiles slightly, and asks, "Have you ever read A Diamond Lies?" The smile widens as you nod. "Then you have probably seen my picture in the back of the book."

Realization dons on you, "You wrote A Diamond Lies!?" You ask incredulously.

He nods happily. "Pleased to meet you. I am Razsile Caine.

Part I

My story is relatively uneventful when compared to many neopets, one we have all heard a thousand times before. I haven't any terrible traumas in my past, nor life altering curses placed upon me. The faeries did not guide my way, and Dr. Sloth never took a particular interest in my life. My story is simple, and that is how I like it. I was adopted soon after birth, by a young girl who frequented Neopia. We grew up together, inseparable throughout our childhoods. The thought that this could change, never even crossed my mind. But as the years went on, and her childhood slipped away, so did she. Her visits to Neopia became less and less frequent. I found my days empty, and my life tedious. I eventually took to passing my days scribbling stories in old notebooks, and by the time, she finally decided her time in Neopia was over, I had twelve of them. I, and my twelve notebooks were deposited at the pound, and with little more than a half hearted apology, my first master, and best friend, logged out forever.

Like so many pets at the pound before me, I found myself in limbo. I had no particularly interesting traits to recommend me, so I spent my days watching the rare, and painted pets being adopted, and scribbling away in my notebooks. I had just finished my fourteenth volume, when Khestrel Caine walked into my life.

I remember the first time I saw her. She had that bright newbie glow to her, and was asking eagerly if there were any draiks or krawks to be had. When the adoption coordinator explained (in that high pitched, sugar coated tone one reserves for dumb animals, and new neopians) that such pets rarely remained in the pound for more than a few moments, and that perhaps she should look for something more common, I felt her eyes settle on me. "What about that one?" She asked. "Is he up for adoption?

The coordinator glanced at the tag on my cell, and nodded. "He's available, if he'll have you.

I wasn't altogether keen on being shackled with another owner, as loosing my first was hard enough, but it I had no desire to spend the rest of my life in the pound, so I nodded my consent.

Wonderful." The coordinator said, unlocking my door, and stepping back. "I'll begin the paperwork.

I peered out, enjoying my first taste of freedom in over three months, only to find myself staring into the curious gaze of my new owner. "I'm Khestrel," she said, excitedly. "What's your name?

My name is Razsile," I answered. "But you can call me Raz if you would like.

Raz then," she said grinning. "It's a pleasure to meet you!

Life with Khestrel took some getting used to. Though, she discovered the ins and outs of Neopia quicker than most, we still had our share of newbie moments. The most memorable of which, I've been forbidden, to ever retell (but I will say that it involved the snowwager, and quite a bit of frostbite). Khe was quite different than my previous owner. Younger for one, louder (by much) for another. She seemed to delight in teasing me, and spent her days reading, or finding trouble to get into. She was delighted when she found out that I was a writer, and literally twisted my leg to get me to send my work into a publisher. I think she was even more excited than I was when my first novel was published, and took great joy in bragging about me to all her friends.

I was happy in my first home. I loved, and was loved. But it couldn't last forever. I am happy where I am now. I love, and am loved. But nothing lasts forever. For all my happiness, that is something I never let myself forget.

Part II

I had been with Khe for two years, when my life changed once again. I had never wanted a petpet. They were a responsibility I didn't need, but somehow there always managed to be at least a few around the house. Khe had a thing for bringing home strays, be it neopets, or petpets. I tended to keep my distance, leaving the mothering to Khe, and the unfortunate Sin and Aki whom she usually managed to con into helping her. But the night that Khe came home, followed by a very sick, very pregnant Nuk, there was no cool headed Sin, or sympathetic Aki to offer assistance. She had, Khe explained as she helped settle the nuk in a comfortable spot, found her in the woods, not far from our house. Khe had given the local petpet doctor a call, but he was dealing with another, more critical patient, and would be there as soon as he could.

So there we were: a nuk in labor, a kougra who became ill at the sight of blood, and a teenage girl whose only experience with hoofed births was sleeping through the labor of her own horse back home. We did our best, but the deck was stacked against us from the very beginning. The fawn was breech, and the mother already exhausted; with no doctor, and no medical training, we were fighting a loosing battle. By the time the doctor arrived four hours later, a tiny, perfect fawn lay snuggled next to her mother, but for her perfection, there was a price. The nuk had given all she had to bring her baby into the world, and in the end, there was nothing the doctor could do for her. Two hours later, she died.

Khe was inconsolable. She felt the death was her fault, and therefore was in no condition to care for a new born. So, the task fell to me. I didn't intend to become a father. I planned to take care of the tiny nuk, until Khe was able, or Aki or Sin returned. I planned to turn her over as soon as I could. I didn't intend to fall in love. But I did. The first time I held her in my arms, and she snuggled her small body against my fur, I was lost.

Everyone thought it was quite funny at first, the tiny nuk whom I named Nymphaea, Nym for short, trotted after me everywhere. I, the solitary member of the family, was suddenly thrust into the heart of it, as Nym drew people to her like moths to a flame. I never wanted a daughter, but I was sent one anyway, and for that, I give thanks everyday.

These years later, only his status as an actor has changed. Fame has not detracted from Aki's charm and despite his poor taste in friends and loves, it is hard to find fault in him.

Sin is who he is. When I need someone at my back, Sin is there. And when I have no desire for company, it's Sin who is lounging on my couch, making a nuisance of himself. He is a double edged sword, a close friend, and constant thorn in my side. He is a good man without a conscience, yet for all his faults will always be able to call me a friend.

Baestien is a pirate. I don't care for pirates. I don't care for their ships, or their lifestyle, and I especially don't care for those ridiculous hats many of them insist on wearing. But Baestien is an old friend of Aki's, and Khe seems to have taken quite a liking to him, so for the time being, he is a pirate I must tolerate. He is cordial enough, but only time will tell if he can overcome his pirate nature.

A: I sketch my pictures pretty small on (about) a 450x450 px canvas in either Photoshop CS or Open Canvas then blow it up to 200-300xs the original size and Ink and color in Photoshop. I then shrink it back down and I'm done. ^^

Q: How long have you been drawing?
A: I've always loved to doodle, but I didn't start drawing seriously until a little less than four years ago.

Q: Did you really sleep through your horses' labor or is that just part of Raz's story?
A: Yup I really did sleep through it. I camped out for a week next to my mare's pen in a camper trailer so I could watch. Sunday night I checked on her, went to sleep. Monday morning, I woke up there were two horses there instead of one. XD

This comic's joke was originally Baestien saying something like, "You know how Khe's been out of town for a while. Well she just discovered the accessories feature. Who do you think she's going to go after when she gets tired of dressing up with the girls?" I switched it because it was super wordy and a really old joke, but totally forgot it had been changed until I read it in the Times. I still don't particularly care for this comic. I think I had more fun with the in the closet joke. ;) Oh, and I forgot Raz's stripes on his back. Oh well.

Originally this was titled "Love Actually" but the NT didn't like that, so I had to redo the name which resulted in it being released in the Valentine's Day issue. Can you say lucky? This was a prize issue, so everyone received a pink petpet paintbrush.

Raz and Elle are eating my favorite food in the world, stroganoff, which I honestly do make absolutely fabulously (ego anyone?). You should try it some time; I will send you the recipe! :)

I don't know what I was thinking when I drew that outfit. I've never worn anything like that in my life. I look like I'm attending Hogwarts or something.

Nym's petpetpet was hard to draw here, because it had to be creepy for the joke, but I really didn't want her to have something hideous. So I went for the creepy cute instead. I'm not sure how well it worked.

This joke was originally thought up for my Creatures of Guardian Keep comic, but when that series stopped, I thought it would be cute to use for Raz. Nym was added on the spot just to fill the role of the petpet. I had no intention of her becoming a larger character, but she was too cute to use just once.

I drew this comic at least two months before it appeared in the NT. When it was drawn, Raz had a completely different personality, and was much younger (even though he doesn't look it in some of the pannels).
