Espresso's Guide

Trading Values for RW, RN & VVWN Pets

IMPORTANT Update

Well that depends on how you define important. ;) I have two things I want from you my lovely readers (because my stats page tells me people actually read this every single day, you're all so lovely and devoted)!

First, I've been casually trading lately because... well I don't have any rw neopets on active accounts that I want anymore and pushing around my trading fodder for hours is boring. So neomail me (at luv_my_pets_666 or wolfgal16) telling me about your trading experiences. What rw/rn/1-4 characters do you have up for trade? Is trading going bad or good? What are you seeking and not getting? What trades have you made lately? What have you seen?

Second, and much less important, do I need a new layout for this petpage?

Now we will return to your regular viewing content.

Introduction

I have written this guide based on my experiences of trading rw pets for 3 years and stalking 2 purges. This is simply my opinion. If you think anything written here is incorrect, use the guide and want to say thanks, or want a quick and fast answer about if a neopet is valuable, you can contact me via neomail by my main account, luv_my_pets_666.

General Information on Value Guidelines

the current trading market

Now for a brief update on the current state of the Neopian trading market! In December I thought we'd have to wait a few months for the trading market to even out after the purge... and it didn't. It seems to be a bit better because people aren't throwing their rw pets at pde customs anymore, but very few people are offering ucs for rw pets and the pc is flooded with boards about draiks or draiks + ffqs for rws and then seeking common rws. I've also seen a few wn high tier ucs up for rns, so it's not all bad. Not sure when I expect this to improve. Horribly pessimistic and so I'm trading less myself! - May 29th 2013.

When I write valuable in this guide, I mean your neopet can trade for ucs. Prior to the 2012 purge valuable rws used to trade for draiks and krawks, but the mega deflation of draiks and krawks from the forgotten shore means that you won't want to trade for any converted neopet if you want to keep trading up. The prices have dropped dramatically and uc value has not dropped at a similar rate. You can still trade for draiks and krawks, but you have to be very very careful.

common mistakes and need to know

If you read nothing else on this page, read this. These are the most common errors people make. Neopet trading has its own special rules. I'll begin by telling you what I think all Neopians need to know about trading for rw/rn/vvwn neopets. The number one common mistake that people make is thinking number of "hits" determines a name's value. This is not true at all. Serious name traders often roll their eyes or leave a board when someone starts posting hits.

The second most common mistake Neopians make is explaining the definition of their name, word, or where it comes from. That's like explaining why a joke is funny. It's not funny anymore. You've just completely undermined any value your word might have had because you are suggesting it is so uncommon that the person won't know it.

The third most common mistake Neopians make is saying a pet is rn because they know someone in real life with the name they are trying to trade. While that may be a real name, real name means something that sounds like a real human name and rather than just a nice sounding made up name given to a neopet. Doremi is supposedly a name some humans have, but it's so uncommon it's just any other v/wned neopet on this site. Sara is a real name because anyone looking at that name instantly knows humans are often named Sara without a second glance. It is a normal, common, name.

quick tips

Here are some of my quick tips to tell if a name is valuable.

Rarity

The rarer a name is the more valuable it is, but rare does not mean obscure! If there are a bunch of words mean the same thing as your word, or are very similar, and so on, you have just lost value. This goes for suffixes and prefixes. There are few variations so cat is valuable. Cats, catting, precat, catted, and so forth are not (yes that's an awful example but you get the point!). Osiris, though amazing, is one of many Egyptian mythical figures, and thus would not be as valuable as Bear. Collie, though awesome, is one of many dog breeds so would not be as valuable as wolf.

Character Potential

A name must have character potential to eventually end up with someone who wants to keep this neopet. For example pail is a lot more common than rile, but rile would be worth a lot more just because of character potential. Words that are objects, like pail, are almost never valuable.

Tidiness

Tidy names are more valuable. Names that do not have two of the same letter next to each other and are short (under 6 letters) are tidy.

These quick tips should help you determine in three easy steps if a neopet has a valuable name, but they of course are just three easy steps. They can be wrong sometimes, be misleading, and don't tell you how valuable a name actually is, so make sure you go further than just the three steps.

the basics

Let's now go over the basics of a valuable name.

For a name to be valuable it MUST meet all of these criteria:

* It has no numbers or underscores in it (unless it is just numbers or just underscores!)
* It is the proper spelling

For each of the following criteria a name doesn't meet, it drops at least one value tier:

* It is short (1-6 letters)
* It is capitalized properly

A name goes up a tier for each of these criteria that it meets:

* It is very easy to pronounce
* It did not come from the latest purge

Keep reading to learn more about what makes a name more valuable depending on what category it falls into!

Real Words

A real word must meet all of the following criteria to be valuable:

* It is in English
* It is one word, not two pushed together
* The person you are offering it to knows the definition right away

There are a few exceptions, but the exceptions rarely get uc offers. If they do get uc offers I call these exceptions the "offer whatever I have" scenario. These words are not actually worth ucs, but if they meet the exceptions someone may be willing to offer a uc neopet because that is all they have at the moment that is close to the value.

The first exception is that the word has to be in English. I have seen people make boards specifically seeking French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, and German real words. If they are seeking these words though, they have to be very very common to have any value. For example, Sun in French would be worth the word Pampered in English, but Pampered in French would probably not get uc offers. Keep in mind that very few people want non-English words so stay away from them if you can. You won't be able to trade them successfully on other language chat boards because they are not as active or as into trading as the English pound chat.

Sometimes two words pushed together may work out. Bloodchilling is one example. Sadly Bloodchilling is too long to trade for a uc. The two words pushed together have to create a name under 6 letters.

A name goes up a tier for each of these criteria that it meets:

* It is a noun
* It is an adjective you would use to describe someone in real life
* It is very fitting to a colour or species of neopets
* It doubles as a real name
* You use this word every day
* This is a root word

A name goes down a tier for each criteria it meets:

* It is a verb or adverb
* It has a suffix, prefix, or plural
* It is a random object

Plural names usually immediately are no longer worth ucs. Cat can get ucs but cats cannot. Prefixes and suffixes can destroy value depending on how they work. Unhappy would be worth ucs. Happiest would probably not get you any uc offers. This goes back to character potential and rarity, which I explained earlier.

Real Names

A real name must meet all of the following criteria to be valuable:

* It is the most common spelling of the name

A name goes up a tier for each criteria it meets:

* It is the shortest version of the name, but not a nickname
* It made it onto a list of the top 100 baby names this year
* You can name 5+ famous people with this name easily
* It is the name of a well known place, like a country
* It doubles as a real word

A name goes down a tier for each criteria it meets:

* It is a last name

The exception to these words are real names that are from books, video games, neopets characters, and so forth. Then it depends on who is looking and what they have to offer. My friend Eric made the name of a dragon boss in the game World of Warcraft in the 2011 purge, but couldn't find an offer until after the 2012 purge (and it was a great offer!). Patience paid off, but we would not advise doing this if you're looking to trade up in a hurry. The only exception to this is first generation Pokemon names... but what in all of Neopia are those?

1 Letter Names

All 1 letter names are valuable. Since there are so few and not all are on active accounts they are extremely rare. These should all trade for ucs fairly easily. I've only personally seen 3 up for trade. One of the owners was seeking uc prdk and received a dn uc draik offer by page 2. Another of the owners was considering a wn uc plushie aisha. The third was seeking wn uc prdk.

1 Number Names

This would include any pet with the name 1-9. All 1 number names are valuable. Since there are so few and not all are on active accounts they are extremely rare. These should all trade for ucs fairly easily. They do not have as much character potential as 1 letter names, but since they are rarer these are probably the most valuable names in the existence of Neopia! That's just my opinion though and they seem to trade for ever so slightly less than 1 letter names. I've only seen less than a handful of these up for trade.

2 Letter Names

Many 2 letter names are valuable as they still aren't that common. It's usually extremely important that they be pronounceable. For example Fa would definitely fetch a uc trade whereas Ff probably would not. They would still be able to trade for ucs if they are a very common acronym that everyone knows without you defining it.

2 Number Names

2 number names have a large number of combinations. They all should be able to trade for ucs, but this might take some more time. This is hypothetical though as somehow I've never seen 2 number names traded successfully before.

2 Character Names

A 2 character name would have 1 number and 1 letter. These names are not valuable and will not trade for ucs.

3 Letter Names

Where each letter is determines how valuable a 3 letter name is. The best format is usually Consonant vowel consonant or vowel consonant vowel. For example I had both Lil and Vri at one point. Lil traded very highly whereas Vri was almost impossible to trade. Even though Vri was pronounceable, 3 letter names that are not the right format will hardly ever retrade for uc neopets (and Vri never did).

3 letter names are easiest to trade if they sound very feminine, very masculine, or like a real word. Some 3 letter names are in fact real words and will be able to trade for ucs just because of their length (the value of the real word here is not important anymore).

3 Number Names

Talia has never seen anyone actually try to trade a neopet with a 3 number name, but she expects that they would not trade for ucs. Names like 100 or 111 might be able to trade for ucs, but names like 628 have a very low to almost no chance. There are just too many number combinations, little character potential, and the pound chat might even call these neopets badly named because it does not like numbers!

3 Character Names

A 3 character name would have 1-2 numbers and 1-2 letters. These names are not valuable.

4 Letter Names

Where each letter is determines how valuable a 4 letter name is. The best format is vowel consonant vowel consonant or consonant vowel consonant vowel.

4 letter names have significantly decreased in value after the 2011 purge. Even perfectly aligned 4 letters rarely (if ever) get ucs just for being 4 letter pet names. Before the 2011 purge these names were regularly trading for low end ucs. I expected their value to pick up again after the purge, but it didn't. People were still seeking them and there was a little bit of a 4 letter frenzy, but after the 2012 purge we're in a 3 letter frenzy and the 4 letter neopet value has dropped significantly. Unless we don't have a purge for 2 more years (which is unlikely) I expect 4 letter pets to even out a little after the 2012 purge but still never be able to get ucs.

4 Number Names

4 number names will be valuable only if they resemble a notable year. People may trade for them because this was the year they were born or a special event happened that year. These pets may trade for ucs if you find the right person. This is very unlikely.

4 Character Names

A 4 character name would have 1-3 numbers and 1-3 letters. These names are not valuable.

My Trading Experiences

Here are some completed trades from start to finish that helped me reach the permanent real word neopets I have today. Hopefully they will show you how real word trading works in action. Keep in mind that trades made before the draik/krawk deflation do not reflect the trading market anymore, but hopefully they're still useful.

You'll notice that a lot of up and down trading happens in these trade chains. I think this accurately reflects how neopets trading happens. If you want to understand why I did a particular trade send me a neomail. Some of these neopets were gifted to me by friends, but I show the whole trade chain from start to finish and haven't noted where they changed owners (because it's confusing and not important). I've included the names of real word neopets to give detailed and helpful information. If your neopet's name is on here and you want it off, please send me a neomail and I'll remove it.
