Stealing: When you steal a weapon, it is only temporary. You get the weapon for the duration of the battle, everything goes back to the rightful owner once the battle ends. If the weapon in their #1 spot has been used by the challenger already, and it was a once-per-battle or 1-use item, then you'll get the weapon from their #2 slot when you try to steal it. For more info on stealing, visit the guide.
