Faraway Directory

hatched review (new site)

introduction

When reading through your introduction, I immediately know your site's name and purpose, your name, and I also have a direct link to contact you if need be. However, the remainder of your introduction provides little information, and I would suggest rewriting it. For example, tell your viewers more about Faraway Directory, add an introductory story, etc.

Your updates are frequent and descriptive, which is a great addition for your viewers. Because your updates area is small and you update nearly every day, I would recommend clearing your updates on a weekly basis to reduce unnecessary scrolling.

In relation to your text-styling, I would recommend bolding your site name rather than italicizing it in order to draw more attention. Because you only have two lines of text in each paragraph, centering your text looks decent, but I would recommend justifying your paragraphs. In addition, I suggest adding the date of your site's opening to your introduction to give viewers an idea of how active your site is. Finally, I would suggest switching the placement of your Shop/Mall count and your application request sign. Putting an image between two paragraphs reduces the amount of attention viewers will pay to the paragraph after your image. In my opinion, the organization of your introduction should look like so:

Welcome to Faraway Directory, a shop directory founded on July 15, 2013 and run by Veronica. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat. If you need help or think that there should be a more specific category, neomail me and I'll consider your thoughts!

Shops listed: 22 — Malls listed: 1

Layout Aesthetics

Upon entering your site, I notice your colour scheme first. You've done a wonderful job designing your site's layout around a particular colour palette. Through your graphics, text styling and colour balance, I can tell you've created a personalized palette using the image in your layout, which guarantees that your colour schemes will match perfectly.

While your layout's colour scheme is appealing and professionally done, I would suggest replacing the solid grey background with a textured one. Without making your site look too busy, a textured background will add just the right amount of appeal so that your background doesn't look so plain.

Suggested sites with textures:

Next, lets take a look at your graphics. The images you've designed for your layout are well-made, but need an adjustment in colour. Firstly, your open/closed status sign is a bit too light, and difficult to read, especially against a white background. The border that surrounds the image is nearly invisible, which makes the image look a little awkward. Next, your neomail sign is much darker than your colour scheme. The text is blurry and blends in to the background, which makes it minimally difficult to make out.

I've applied a couple different colouring techniques to each of these images using GIMP. Basically, I adjusted the Hue, Lightness, and Saturation of each of the images, and I colourized each of the images to sharpen the base colours. In addition, I changed the colour of the border to #c7deec and blurred the edges, which makes it stand out a bit more while still blending in to your white background. Below, you can see the images before and after editing was applied.

Feel free to replace your images with the ones shown below, but please make sure to credit me for the colour adjustment.

Before editing

After editing

Layout Function

Overall, your layout is very easy to navigate. Your navigation is simple to locate and use, which is very convenient for your visitors. One aspect I'm not particularly fond of is the fact that the Shop of the Month link has it's own row in the navigation. At the same time, if it was sized equivalently to the others, you would have an odd number of links and your navigation would look even more awkward.

As a solution, I would recommend making the Shop of the Month link equal to the size of the others, and stretching out your Home link at the top of your navigation instead. That way, it's easier for visitors to return to your home page, and your navigational system doesn't look out of place.

content organization

Next, your listing strategy and space utilization could definitely use some work. Currently. you're listing each shop in a 608 by 78px grey box. Firstly, I would recommend putting pixels from your key next to the name of the shop to conserve space. Changing the height of each of the grey boxes to 50px will reduce the space that each shop listing takes up, which will give you more room for listed shops and reduce scrolling when you have more shops to list.

To use space even more effectively, take a look at the size of your content box. 608px in width seems like a lot of space for just one shop, doesn't it? I'd suggest changing the format of your categories to two side-by-side columns. That way, each of your pages will be able to hold double the shops that they once had, and your scrolling will be reduced. I've included a screenshot of your layout with two side-by-side columns in the content area below. (If you need some help coding this format, just let me know after you've read through your review! I'd be happy to help!)

proofreading, textbox check and link sweep

I quickly checked your site for grammatical errors, broken or inactive links, and incorrect textboxes. Here are a couple mistakes I found.

In the General shops area, Mocking Jay should be changed to MockingJay, as one word.
In the General shops area, Petpets and More! has changed its shop name to Codestone & Negg Shop.
In the Wearables & Grooming shops area, Midnight's Star has changed its shop name to Midnight's Beauty Boutique.

All of your links lead to the correct place, and all of the codes in your textboxes match up with your images.

final comments

Overall, Faraway Directory is off to a great start! Your navigation makes it simple to browse through your site. You've listed a great amount of shops and malls for being such a new site. Reorganizing your content will be the most beneficial improvement to make to your site at the present time.

Be sure to link back to Soar after your review. I've added information regarding your review to the button below, but feel free to substitute it for another!

awakened advertising

winded review (content-based)

content overview

Much of your content is well-written, but I would suggest going more in depth with what you're saying. For example:

If you advertise all the time, try to figure out what you need to do to get them yourself, but some guilds restrict them to council members, and that's fine.

To be honest, I've read this paragraph more than 5 times, and I have no idea what it says. I can understand what the paragraph is intended to say through the header above it, but don't hesitate to go more in depth with your content; more content can never be too much!

In your Copy and Paste Advertisements section, you've definitely given good information to your visitors. The majority of larger guilds will use this form of recruitment board, so reading a bit about how browsers see the ad will give them a new point of view. However, I would recommend giving visitors a couple suggestions about alternatives to these types of advertisements.

Most recruiters are a bit wary on when it's appropriate to neomail a recruit, which is why your section regarding this issue has the potential to be very helpful. The bulleted list you've provided gives only minimal information. However, this is one of the largest issues facing the GC and recruiters. I would suggest adding more content to this section, potentially providing examples of different situations that may occur.

high-quality content

A perfect example of your high-quality content is on your first page, Font and Avatar. Link in the signature = the way to go! Not only does this section stand out because it's used in a header, but it's easily understandable to even those who aren't familiar with developing fonts.

Next, your bulleted list on your second page is very informative for visitors. It gives a brief list of the most important factors that recruiters should look for, which is helpful and easy to remember in all situations.

When you advertise on other guilds' recruitment boards, you're only wasting your time. When a guildless person clicks on that guilds' board, they expect to learn about that guild, and they won't scroll through pages looking for another guilds' advertisement. If you want to attract attention to your own guild, try making your own board!

Not only is the paragraph above decently written, but it's blunt and addresses an important issue on the Guild Chat board. You're providing advice to your visitors, as well as your personal opinion.

content that needs improvement

The majority of your content, although informative, lacks professionalism. In your first paragraph in the Font and Avatar section, you wrote:

I tend to use arial or verdana or something simple like that. The other font faces are cool, but you want the recruit to be able to read what you're saying. Also, try not to use a bright color for your neo html color. I tend to stick with black, or darker colors. Yellows kind of blind people. Use the lighter colors as complimentary colors in your signature.

I would suggest rewriting this paragraph with a more professional tone in mind, for example:

When advertising on the boards, I would recommend using a simple font, such as arial, verdana or another similar font. Other font faces are attractive, but you need to make sure viewers can read what you're saying during a recruit. In addition, try to veer away from bright colours such as yellow. Instead, I would suggest using darker colours as the main colour in your font, which will enable you to use lighter, complimentary colours in your signature.

The content organization throughout your site could also use some work. My first suggestion would be to split your Extras and Sitely pages into two different sections to make it more convenient for visitors to browse through your site.

final comments

Overall, Awakened Advertising definitely has room for improvement, mainly in regards to professionalism. In addition, make sure you're never holding back when it comes to adding content to your guide; you can never be too in-depth!

Thank you for requesting at Soar! Make sure to leave credit for your review. I've added your review's information to the button and icon below.

acrylic

feathered review (in-depth)

introduction and first impression

10 out of 10

I love the atmosphere of your site that I encounter upon entrance. It's very welcoming and cute! Your site name is instantly visible, and your subtitle follows. It took me a second to find your navigation, but the placement is very appropriate for your layout.

Not only is your introduction warm and welcoming, but it's also very professional and informative. I instantly know the name of your site, who the owner is, what I will find on your site, how long you've been open, and I have a contact link if I ever need to mail you, all in a brief, concise paragraph.

No point deduction

layout function and aesthetics

19 out of 20

Aesthetically, your layout is beautiful. The image is perfectly recoloured and spaced and your colour scheme is perfect. The padding applied to your content area is very appropriate; your text never seems as if it's going to spill out of the box.

Aside from your Welcome and Sitely headers, I would suggest adding a break in the coding between your Content and Extra headers, simply to make better use of your layout's space. I would also recommend adding a break after each of your back resources in each content area of your site, aside from Resources, Suggest a Graphic and Past Layouts. In addition, I would add one or two breaks at the bottom of your credits. At the same time, I would suggest increasing the margin between the textareas and buttons in your extra box at the bottom of your layout where you've placed a few buttons.

- 1 point for use of space

content organization and visitor convenience

20 out of 20

Overall, your content is very well organized. I didn't have any problems finding anything or navigating through your site.

In regards to convenience for your visitors, your site is nothing short of professional. The only recommendation I can make is to reorganize your Scribbles page, and place each scribble in the same row to decrease scrolling and increase convenience for your viewers.

No point deduction

quality of content

23 out of 25

Your content is outstanding. You have a wonderful eye for detail, especially when it comes to individual pixels. (I guess you kind of need that to run a pixel site!) For unusual pixels (such as the second row), I would consider adding a text hover to let your viewers know what if pixel is supposed to represent something, or if it's just another adorable creation you came up with.

My first recommendation to improve your content is to make sure to colour of each pixel is appropriate. The majority of your content is perfectly shaded, but my concern is the last two rows of pixels you provide. It's a little difficult to make out the shape of these beauties, primarily because of how light they are, especially the candies and the yellow and green popsicles, along with some of the bullets in your resource section.

In relation to the candies, the center is nearly invisible on the first three, and only the pink stripe in the blue candy is decently visible. In addition, the outer edges of the wrapper are even lighter, making them more difficult to see. From a foot away, I can barely make out the yellow and green candies, and I can only see the main circle on the pink and blue candies.

Take a look at this little guy. He's got a great shading technique applied (and he's adorable), but he only looks his best on a white background. Although sometimes it seems impossible, try your best to remove all of the white pixels surrounding your images.

- 2 points for colouring techniques

quantity of content

19 out of 20

You already have a wonderful skill, and I would suggest using it to create even more adorable graphics! Currently, Acrylic offers eight sets of pixels, four scribbles two vectors and three sets of bullets. Your site has been open for over a year according to your introduction, and personally, I did expect to see a little more content that what you've created. I definitely think your site could benefit if you spent the majority of your time adding content, and I would therefore suggest making this your top priority.

- 1 point for quantity of content

sitely section

5 out of 5

Your Sitely section is another great area of your site. Everything is well organized and easily accessible. Each of your links directs me to the correct location, and all of your credits are appropriate.

Take a look at the buttons shown above. Although I love that they portray your site's content, they could both use improvement. In the first button, the image is very crisp and clear, and easy to make out. The background applied does a wonderful job of portraying the scribble as a focal point. However, the text is far too bright and the glow animation makes the text even more illegible. In the second button, although the text is a bit more readable, the image used as the focal point is bright as well, and barely visible.

would I recommend your site?

Recommended

I would recommend Acrylic. Although I wish your site held more content to browse through, your layout is extremely appealing and convenient, your site is very active and the majority of your content is very professionally made.

would I revisit your site?

Yes

I will definitely be revisiting Acrylic. I can't wait to see all the new designs for pixels, vectors, scribbles and resources that you have in mind!

Acrylic is definitely an extremely high-quality site, in my opinion. Your content's quality is amazing. For now, I would recommend focusing on the quantity of content that your site provides.

introduction

I entered your site to a welcoming an informative introduction. I immediately know the name of your site, along with who the owner is, and what your site offers. However, I would recommend bolding your site name and italicizing any extraneous information. To further improve your introduction, I would suggest adding the date that your site opened, along with a direct link to contact you. Here's an example of a re-written introduction:

Welcome to Magnifique, a graphics site. My name is Delightful, and my goal is to offer quality banners, icons, and resources that will help cater to your every site need. We also take custom requests. Have a look around and see what Magnifique has to offer! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to neomail me!

Next, I was originally a bit confused upon entering your site. At first, I thought the subtitle you've weaved into your layout's image initially made me believe they were links to your site. I would suggest changing the subtitle to "Graphics by Delightful" or something similar to accent your site.

Finally, the Recently Added section of your layout is a wonderful feature that immediately gives viewers an example of your content.

layout aesthetics

Your layout is very purple, haha. Your site name is big and bold, and it even glows against your layout, making it stand out. The image on the right hand side of your site definitely adds appeal, and you've recoloured and textured it well.

Your navigational links are the largest aspect of your site's aesthetics that needs improvement. Although each of the image links have glow effects, they're all very pixelized.

You have more room for improvement in your site's headers. Right now, your headers have a solid colour background and border, with a slight text indent. I would suggest experimenting with new styles of headers, and potentially take a look around other sites for header inspiration.

Finally, take a look at your paragraphs. Left-aligning each one definitely gives your site a professional appeal, but justifying each paragraph will line everything up evenly, adding even more appeal. To do this, use (p align="justify"). The only drawback is that you have to put this code in each tag; it doesn't work if it's simply in your style tag.

layout function

Your content area is a bit too long for your layout. This goes for each page with a scrollbar, along with the updates div on your home page. The overlap is subtle, so you'll need to look closely upon inspection. Check out the screenshot below to see the highlighted error area. I would reduce the height of all of your divs by at least 10px.

visitor convenience

The only major drawback of your site's visitor convenience is the amount of scrolling your layout demands. Firstly, in your Updates, try reducing the amount of scrolling visitors have to do by combining updates using commas. For example, +6 Diamond Bullet, + 7 Counter Bases. In your Request section, the majority of your rules roll over to the second line by only a few words. I would suggest rewording your rules to condense them as much as possible.

In addition, I would suggest placing your "Back" button in each section near the bottom of each page in the center, so it's easier to locate for your viewers.

content organization

Overall, your site is decently organized. I only had any minor troubles navigating my own way around. Firstly, I would suggest reorganizing your navigational links to the following order: Home, Premades, Resources, Request, Pick-up, Extras, Sitely.

Another adjustment I would recommend considering is spacing your content out more. Although this will increase scrolling, it will also make your content and layout look less cluttered and crammed together. For example, add another break or two between each of your premade banner sections, as well as each section in your Sitely area.

Next, I would suggest revamping your Resource and Premade pages; in your Premades section, the more content you add, the more scrolling your layout will demand, which will get lengthy after a while. In addition, the page will get pretty listy. On your Resource page, listing the types of resources included in each category will confuse your viewers as to which text is a link (it confused me, at least). Adding subnavigation to these section will not only reduce scrolling and make the pages less list-like, but it will increase convenience for your visitors.

quality of content

The majority of your content is high-quality, which will definitely give viewers a reason to come back and see how you improve over time! In regards to your premades, I love each of the banners you have available. Immediately, I can tell that you're adept in graphic-designing. The colouring techniques you've applied to each banner is professional and appropriate, and blends in well. The textures are neither over or underdone, they're very well incorporated. The text-styling on each banner blends in well with the images and doesn't overlap anything too much. The borders used on each banner are also well done.

The banners shown above do have room for improvement. Take a look at the images themselves; they both seem very stretched. Before styling the banner until completion, make sure the scaling and cropping are appropriate for the size.

The same goes for the button base shown above; the image seems extremely stretched.

Next, in relation to your resources, your circle and diamond bullets are well made, but I would suggest adding a "glare" effect to your square bullets, as well. This will give more depth in a simple manner that doesn't overwhelm the bullet. Personally, I love the resources your site offers. They're all unique in their own way, and they're a perfect fit into the site community.

quantity of content

Overall, your site has a great amount of content for being so new. You already have several types of resources, and different types of premade banners. At the moment, I would focus on adding more to your premade section, since it has less content that your resource section. I would suggest adding a few text-based banners, as opposed to image-based. Many people prefer text-based banners because they typically suit their site's theme better than a specific image. In addition, I would suggest adding a few different colours of resources; grey, for example, because not all colours suit every site, but grey and other neutral colours will go with anything!

final comments

Overall, Magnifique is off to a great start! Your content is high-quality and professionally created. With a few corrections and making sure all of your content is appropriately sized and developed, there won't be any content on your site that isn't high-quality. Keep it up, because I can't wait to see your talents improve!

weaknesses

I am not adept in graphic making. I will review graphics based on image cropping, textures, colour schemes, and so on, but my knowledge base is limited.

While I do own a variety of sites, my familiarity with others is limited. My knowledge base lacks in sites such as graphic-making sites and font sites.

I'm not perfect. There will be details of your site and review that I will look over unintentionally. However, I try my very best to limit and control this. Please remember, I'm still just a person behind a computer! If you ever feel like I overlooked a piece of your site or you have a specific area you'd like to discuss with me after your review, don't hesitate to ask!

My reviews will be unintentionally harsh in some points. I don't sugar-coat words, and I am as honest as possible throughout your review to make sure you understand everything.
