The Fallen One

Story

Rawr! *squeak* The ruins loom before you, crumbling, decaying and an ancient tribute to a once grand and majestic city. Once the golden towers rose above and shone as a beacon of light and wonder to others. People came from far and wide to see the beauty of the city and pay their respects to the Pharaoh. The lanes were filled with bustling crowds, merchants selling their wares, acrobats and street performers, storytellers and even the occasional pickpocket. But that is in the past now, forgotten. All that remains of the former glory is the dark crumbling masonry, eerie moonlit towers and the dead and silent streets. You stand before the cavernous entrance to the old temple. The mouth yawns before you, promising to swallow you in its black and uninviting depths. The city possesses a sombre and bleak atmosphere....it is a place that has seen the ages come and go and yet it still stands and now, wants to rest undisturbed. An ancient and forbidding presence seems to hang over the ruins like a shroud. But yet as you stand at the entrance, mulling things over, the desert winds tear at your clothes, the sands swirl ferociously and cloud your vision. Your skin is being scoured and the chilly desert night is taking its toll on you. The desert is unrelenting. The storm is worsening. You must take shelter.

You hesitate.

But only for a moment.

You let the darkness swallow you.

You find yourself in the ancient temple, the old radiance still trying to manifest itself through the layers of dust and eons of neglect. The wide hall was lined with magnificent stone and marble columns, some shattered, others still standing. Most had hieroglyphs carved into the stone, accompanied etchings and mosaic paintings of the gods and mythical beings. The walls were likewise, covered with beautiful paintings and inscriptions, relating to a world that was long gone. Moonlight filters through cracks sporadically, providing some, if poor, light to break through the heavy gloomy atmosphere of the temple. You meander towards the central altar, your footsteps echoing offensively in the silence, supplemented by the howling wind outside. The altar is a heavy construction carved completely from solid stone and engraved with more intricate hieroglyphs. Peering past the alter and into the gloom, the dark shadow of a throne gradually emerges and next to it, the massive form of stone dragon, lying elegantly like a feline, neck arched forward, eyes closed. You walk up the stairs, dropping your heavy pack which lands with a loud thump, and move to examine the beautiful statue. The dragon has been beautifully painted in a deep sapphire blue, with a white mane and various pieces of gold jewellery. You marvel at the workmanship of the ancients, the detail on the skin is so elaborate. Each individual scale is present and the paint makes the dragon look life-like. Suddenly overwhelmed with weariness, you sit down and lean against the side of the stone giant and let fatigue overcome you.

You awake to the sensation of your backing sliding away, leaving you to fall backwards.

How long were you asleep for? Checking your watch you see a mere ten minutes have passed.

You gaze upwards and recoil to find a monstrous, draconian face staring at you through blank white, shining eyes. Panicking you scramble up and try to bolt down the stairs when an icy, trickling sensation washes over you like a wave, freezing you motionless.

Calm down human. I will not harm one who is so insignificant" The beast speaks to you in a flat tone, emotionless. Neither cold nor joyful. The iciness trickles away just like it had come and you are free to move again.

Looking around, you notice the stone statue is gone, and then you realise. It never was a statue. You shudder and thank Fyora that it isn't a malevolent creature.

The dragon paces the temple, and you get the feeling that it is irritated, though it openly portrays no emotion. Finally you venture a tentative question.

Who are you?

The dragon pauses in its pacing and stalks towards you. Fear washes over you. Have you angered the beast?

He stops a few meters away and promptly sits on his haunches, his blank white eyes staring solemnly at you.

Minutes pass.

Finally, he speaks.
I am Sakiir. The exiled one.

Eons ago, the cosmos was born in an instant. A single flash, and the whole universe came into being. As did we, the Serahamic beings. We numbered ten.

Ten greater beings who could control the very essence of space and time, life and death.
Ten beings who were infinitely powerful.
Ten beings who could tamper with the world as they pleased.

And I was one of them.

The time passed. We were oblivious to the little planet you call home....it was nothing to us and we had other, bigger places to roam. The galaxy was our plaything. Life began to appear on the planet, primitive, but still life. In no time at all, the life evolved, became sentient. Humans and creatures appeared.

It became clear that we could not tamper with this new form of life without restrictions, else there would be catastrophic consequences. We convened and came to agreement we needed governance and guidelines, we could not simply run rampant. Each would control one element or aspect of the earth. In an attempt to govern our great power, we created laws and limitations that we had to abide by or risk grave consequences.

One thing we were sanctioned to do was tamper with the mortal's lives for our own ends, but only indirectly. The mortals learned of our existence and began to worship us, as mortals do. They believed us to be gods.

I was the deity of the sand and deserts. I governed these lands, the benevolent protector and guardian. I watched my people's lives with great interest for they were curious things, with short lived but bright lives. I watched them all...inspired some, made some great, some sorrowful. Others I tested, making their lives a misery before leading them to happiness if they were deserving. Their lives lay bare to me. Their yearnings, their misfortunes, their sorrows, their joys...and their loves. Love is a curious thing. It is so ethereal, so beautiful but yet savage. Once it captures you, there is no escaping its thrall. Many found great happiness in love while for others it was their downfall.

I watched all of my people, but there was one who I particularly found interesting. Isaria, the Pharaoh Kaneket's daughter, possessed incredible beauty, intelligence and remarkable generousity to friends and servants alike. She possessed a wonderful charisma, was marked by great wisdom, truth, was gracious, attentive, elegant and gentle. I cannot say enough good things about her...she was worthy of the stars and the mortals recognised this too...she was admired from afar by many and had suitors visit her daily with high hopes. She was enchanting.

Finally one day I had enough of watching. Eons of feeling no emotion. Simply....existing. I had enough. I wanted to experience what life was like for a mortal. I wanted to feel pain, sadness, joy, love. Something...different.

I changed my form, my essence naturally shaping itself into what it was drawn to. A draik was the most befitting form. I found myself on the outskirts of the great city, its towers of gold gleaming in the distance. And so began my experience as a mortal.

I created a mortal persona. I was a wealthy merchant from a nearby land, wishing to experience the beauty of the desert and setting up a profitable business and establishing trade routes. I eased myself into the Pharaoh's court and enjoyed myself...I made friends with other wealthy merchants, princes and princesses and entertainers. Mortals certainly were interesting. You have no idea how easy it was to immerse myself in their world, lose myself and become someone else, a mortal.
Weeks passed and I experienced everything I could possibly imagine, and more. I got such an insight into human life: their idiosyncrasies, literature...everything drew me in. I became a mortal in my mind, but not my soul. It was a wondrous experience. However, seeing Isaria for the first time at the royal court...she was even breathtaking in this world. More stunning in person.
It began with brief encounters. Simple chatter, passing comments, but we got to know each other. Weeks and months passed and the time at which I should have returned to my true state came and went. I remained in mortal form even though it wearied and weakened me. I could not admit to myself why I could not return. My body yearned to return, but my soul clung to this mortal world of intrigue and emotion. In the end, I did return.

More time passed, and against all intuition, I returned to the mortals. I couldn't understand it. Was I falling for the mortal? It seemed to be so. And the cycle continued- I traveled back and forth between worlds, not being capable of staying in each more than briefly. I knew what I was doing was wrong: I was directly interfering with the mortals by becoming one, but I couldn't resist. Eventually I told her what I was and though she was fearful at first, being the great creature that she was, she took it in her stride. More surprisingly, she stayed by my side.

I was torn. Confused. This couldn't go on.

And then, they found out. The other nine.

The backlash was insufferable. The others were enraged. What I had been doing was wrong. Interfering with them directly? Unimaginable! Becoming a mortal? Unspeakable! I was a fool. They decided I must be punished, as well as the mortal who had done nothing wrong. They wanted to destroy her essence so she could never return to the world again, in any shape or form. She would be completely gone. Non existing. But of course I rebelled and I had some supporters. It was too extreme. Instead, to my utter dismay, her form was changed and she was cursed to wander the deserts forever.

Because of me.

And what of my fate? I could not be destroyed. Instead I was banished to the mortal realms as an immortal. Some of my powers were stripped, but many I retained.

Forced to reside on this world, a being who can never die. Cursed to stay here, forever or until the others allow me to return, mourning what I have lost, mulling over my past and fate. Millennia passed, I am still here. Probably will be for millennia more, serving my punishment. The city fell long ago, all that remains are ruins, but I find comfort in this place and my memories.

I remain here. Waiting.

About Sakiir

Sakiir.
A silent, stoic type, weary of the world, Sakiir is an ancient exiled immortal who resides in a ruined city somewhere in the expanse of the Great Desert. He divulges nothing and it rather seems he prefers it that way. He is searching for a soul who he once lost, knowing they cannot be found. Sakiir just prefers to immerse himself in the human literature, and dusty old scrolls, it is how he bears his loss.

Alatariel.
She is a gentle soul. I see her aura on the other plane, she is curious, mischievous and entertained easily, calm and sensitive. Alatariel is fond of most, although she shows a trait of being shy in her personality, she is not one to be messed with. A healer she is and a great one at that.

Ikaris.
He has an aggressive nature, but deep down, and I do mean deep down, he is well meaning. He is plagued by the burden of guilt that is not his to bear, and he has a brave, noble reputation. I do not question of the deeds he has fulfilled. Ikaris is quick-tempered, and flares at even the slightest of agitations.

Makeables

Just an extra note, try to avoid resizing them as being pixelated means they will warp if you resize...if you guys are interested, I could make normal lined ones....but these would only be good for those that have a program other than ms paint probably. If you want to see something like this, mail me!

Instructions for ms paint-

Save the makeable to your computer (Take the png formated one, cause the one with a clear background is useless unless you have a program like photoshop) and open it in Microsoft Paint. Colour it to suit you and taadaa!! Your own custom Draik!! Save in jpg format otherwise the colours will warp, then you can upload to your own image host and put it on your site or whatever.

Instructions for Other Programs (or new versions of MS PAINT)-

Pretty much the same as above except you can deal with the gif and transparent backgrounds. When you open the makeable up though, you'll notice it will have a black background and you can't colour it...copy the whole picture, open a new document and paste. Close the old version and delete the black background in the new version and its ready for editing ^_^ When finished, if you have a newer version of photoshop, save as a compuserve gif to maintain the transparency. Photoshop 5 has the option to -export- as a gif89a which does the same thing.

Rules:

1) Please link back, it makes it easier for others to find them ^_^
2) Please do NOT use these in the BC (It's against the BC rules to enter other people's art and it will most likely end up with you being frozen)
3) Do not remove my name from the picture (feel free to move it around though!)
4) You can add other features to the picture besides colour to make it look like your own Draik eg. giving it dragon wings, jewelry, etc Also you can remove the line that divides the fur on the chest and back if your Draiks don't have that...duh!
5)Please enjoy, or if you have a problem with them, please let me know =)
