Hello and welcome to Lutari Island, a Lutari directory & mini guide for all things Lutari! Although far from being my favorite Neopets species, Lutaris are absolutely adorable and extremely special. So if you are the proud owner of a Lutari, cheers to you! Here at Lutari Island you can get your Lutari(s) listed in the directory and see the other great Lutaris of Neopia. Please note that we only list permanent Lutaris; please don't submit labrats or pets that you constantly morph/change. We also strive to be a source of basic Lutari knowledge and info for those who don't know about how this great species came to be.

You can navigate the site via the links on the left. There may also be "sub-menus" on some of the pages to help organize all the information. This layout was made and tested on a 1920x1080 screen resolution, so I'm not 100% sure how it looks on smaller resolutions. If anything is extremely cut off or misaligned please let me know. (:

July 17, 2014
After a little push from a friend I decided to make my second attempt at finally getting this Lutari directory on its feet.

August 4, 2012
First attempt at setting up the directory, quickly abandoned the project. Oops.

Ever since I made my first two (and now only one *tear*) Lutaris on Lutari Day back in 2009, I knew I wanted to do something special for them. I always thought keeping a directory would be fun and wanted to know how many other permanent Lutaris there were in Neopia. Since the other Lutari unfortunately fell victim to the lab ray, it was an easy decision to hijack Tadayas's petpage for a Lutari directory. Names are extremely important to me, so I thought for a long time over what to name this. Honestly I almost settled on "Lutari Luau" or "Lutari Lounge" but they sounded pretty dumb when I ran them by a friend. Then I realized, Lutaris originate from their own island...what could be more appropriate than that? So here it is, my own little corner of Lutari Island.

However, even though I had the idea since then I didn't have the chance to act on it until 2012, as I took a three year Neopets break in between. At the time I was on another pet frenzy and attempted to actually get some work done on it. I managed to get as far as the basic layout but sadly became distracted by my other pets...oops. I was pretty quiet on Neopets during 2013 so it wasn't until summer of 2014 when I once again rolled up my sleeves to tackle this project. And after a several days of coding madly, making banner after banner, and looking up info on Lutaris, I finished! A lot of time and effort went into this directory so I hope anyone who views it enjoys it. Let's spread the Lutari love!

For your convenience we've included a small section on Lutaris! It is in no way a comprehensive guide, there are many other sites and petpages that cover everything more in-depth. But if you ever wanted to know a little more about the species aside from the fact you can't transfer them, read on! Here are some links to other Lutari guides, but keep in mind some of them may be outdated because the whole Neopets mobile/Lutari Island business started in 2006.

A mysterious island floats around the oceans of Neopia. It's never in the same place twice, which makes it quite difficult to track, and all the more intriguing. The mysterious island of Lutari is currently being pummeled by an unusually large storm! Between the whirlpools, water spouts and lightning it has been advised that no Neopets are allowed to visit its shores. Even the sea life seems to be staying away...

Completing a triangle between Moltara and Altador, Lutari Island is a mystical and mysterious drifting land mass that hasn't been accessible for years. Known to be the home of the Lutari species, it is a lush tropical island covered in colorful flora and fauna. It was first introduced on June 24, 2006 to work in tandem with the Neopets Mobile project. However, on-site the island is constantly under the effects of a large storm and has no active pages or links.

Neopets Mobile

Neopets Mobile was a Neopets mobile service for certain cell phone providers which allowed users to do a few different tasks, create a Lutari, explore the island, and play some games. By signing up for Neopets Mobile you received a one of a kind Lutari bead for your talisman, unobtainable anywhere else. The service was discontinued as of June 30, 2009. Here are some of the locations on the island available on the mobile app:

So you too would like to join the hallowed ranks of Lutari owners? Or perhaps can't get enough and need MORE? There are three ways to get a Lutari: normal pet creation, a morphing potion, or the lab ray.

Create a Neopet

On April 19th, aka Lutari Day, throughout the day TNT releases small batches of Lutaris to be created. The batches are usually just a few thousand at a time, and even though that may seem like a large number, remember that there are thousands of Neopians vying to create one too! Simply keep refreshing the Create a Neopet page over the course of the day to see if you're lucky enough to catch one. It may help to keep an eye on the Pound Chat board because sometimes people will post boards alerting that another batch has been released for creation. This is the cheapest and most straightforward way to make a Lutari, but it'll take some time/perseverance. You'll also need three or less Neopets on your account in order to create a new one.

Morphing/Transmogrification Potions

The next way to get a Lutari is through a morphing or transmogrification potion. These are extremely handy potions that will change your preexisting Neopet into the specified Lutari. So if you already have a pet with a name you like, this will be the way to go. Although these potions can get very expensive, the upside is that you can buy them in a variety of different colors, thereby cutting out the process of buying a separate paint brush to paint it. If this is your first time using a morphing potion/transmogrification potion on your account, you'll also get a cool avatar.

Lab Ray

The third and final way to change one of your pets into a Lutari is through the lab ray! If you already have access to it, great. If not, it might cost you a little. But the lab ray is a fairly decent investment that will prove its usefulness over time, if not just for being able to challenge the Scientist for gender changes. Either way, if you're lucky you might get a species zap that will change your pet into a Lutari! Beware of zapping your Lutaris, because they can just as easily be changed into another species.

Lutari Attachment

Something that makes Lutaris even more unique than your average pet (well, some say unique, others say troublesome) is their attachment to the account they're on. Lutaris cannot be transferred nor can they be pounded in the hopes of moving them to another account. If you pound your Lutari, it disappears and is said to have "run away." In the case of transfers it's not even an option as the Lutari will refuse to be transferred. So be careful; if you want to move a Lutari between accounts you'll need to morph it into a different species, transfer it, and then morph it back into a Lutari. Think carefully before you create or morph a Lutari!

Being the great and magnificent species they are, several Lutaris have carved their names into the annals of Neopia. Some found their glory through adventuring, others in competitive sports. Either way, they are known across the lands and may have legions of adoring fans. Here are some famous, or perhaps infamous, Lutaris you should know.

Dr. Landelbrot

Dr. Landelbrot is best known for inventing the confusinator, with which he distributes Random Events all over Neopia. This is his attempt at fighting the chaos that is ever growing. Although he originally was based in Moltara, he discovered that he didn't get enough coverage shooting out Random Events from there. So he built a spaceship called the Coincidence to send out Random Events from space. And ever since then he has been orbiting Neopia.

Mr. Chipper

Mr. Chipper is a smiling Lutari salesman from Happy Valley in Terror Mountain. He was the very first Lutari to make its appearance in Neopia back in 2005 with the rest of the species following soon after. If you possess a special ice cream coupon (either having purchased on from a user shop or being given one by Taelia for completing a quest) he will gladly share his wares with you. If not, unfortunately there is nothing he can do for you.

Roxton A. Colchester III

An incredibly seasoned adventurer, Roxton makes it his business to explore where no one has gone before. At 24 years old he is quite the character and not only accompanied Professor Fairweather to the Lost Isle but also is credited with helping discover Moltara. A sarcastic fellow with a dry sense of humor and a practiced skirt chaser, Roxton is admittedly fairly decent at what he does but probably considers himself one of Neopia's greatest explorers. (Neopedia article)

Xana DiLanche

Last but not least (my personal favorite, yeah not biased at all) is Xana DiLanche, the goalie for Shenkuu's Yooyuball team. She has been a part of the team ever since Shenkuu's introduction into the international competitive Yooyuball stage in 2007, saving goals left and right. Although they say she has good hands, due to her inexperience she may sometimes fall under the pressure of bad nerves. Nevertheless Xana has earned her place on the Shenkuu team and in the hearts of many supporters.

You have probably seen this image before on every userlookup, under the "Site Feature Trophies." This is the Lutari talisman and every account has one. If you're fortunate enough to get your hands on some Lutari beads, you can add them to your talisman! While there is not much concrete information on the specifics, having Lutari beads on your talisman can increase your on-site luck. There are four colors of beads and five different types. Each talisman can hold four sets of five beads, one in each quadrant. The Tongi bead was only available through Neopets Mobile referrals and were automatically added to your talisman. Therefore they are not available anymore. The other four beads, Matu, Oranu, Ranaka, and Urapa, can all be bought from other users and acquired through Random Events. However, if you add a bead to your talisman, you cannot remove it.

The Lutari Talisman affects your luck in a few different places. Having them can grant you bonus neopoints awarded when sending scores on flash games or discounts when buying items in shops (not user shops, however). Your neopoint winnings can be increased by 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%. If you have the Space Faerie Charm from Premium, the effects stack. With regards to the shop discount, when paying for the item the shopkeeper may drop the price up to 10%. Having beads on your talisman can also increase your chances of receiving Random Events while browsing the site, but not at a quantifiable rate.

I have a bad habit of selfishly occupying my pets' petpages for various reasons...Tadayas is just one of my many victims of page-snatching. But even though the bulk of his page is dedicated to the directory, it would be remiss not to give him his own little section! However all my energies have been used up on making the actual directory so this will probably stay empty/under construction for a looong time. xD; Especially the adoptables section since ain't nobody got time for that...yet. OTL So shoo shoo, move along. Nothing to see here!

Basics

Disposition

The blinding sun hung high in the sky, overlooking the bustling beach. Islanders milled about conducting their daily business, some heading off to other parts of the island while others finding their work closer to home. A tall Lutari with dark skin and hair emerged from a sturdy looking hut. He only wore bright red swim trunks (made in Shenkuu) and a gold star pendant around his neck. He reached his long arms above his head for a good stretch as his bare feet sunk into the hot sand. As other individuals began to take note of his presence he was met with friendly greetings and waves. "Good morning, TK!" a cheerful Kougra woman called from where she was grinding some dried plants. The Lutari flashed a bright smile and shouted a hello back. He was making his way towards some sheds designated for storage when all of a sudden he was knocked flat onto his back. "Oof!" The ring of laughter reached his ears as a golden colored Bori sat on him. "Slept all through the morning, didn't ya, TK?" A mischievous smirk was present on the Bori's face. "Get off me, Nohea! Jeeze someone's been eating too many munuberries." Tadayas grinned and gave his friend a shove. A large hand was extended down to Tadayas, helping him to his feet. A strong looking Zafara smiled at his friend and said, "No doubt helping the chief with important things, right?" Tadayas chuckled. "Of course, every breathing moment I devote to work!" The three of them laughed heartily, all knowing that the Lutari had merely overslept after partying all through the night. Nohea, a handsome Bori, was an early riser and the more serious Makani just barely slept. "How are the waves looking today, men?" Tadayas said. "Strong and wild, just like every day," Makani replied. "Well then let's get to it!" Nohea whooped, dashing to the shed. The three retrieved their well loved surfboards from where they were kept, long, sturdy, and emblazoned with tribal designs. Other than keeping his father's, and one day his, tribe safe there was nothing Tadayas loved more than surfing. The feel of his surfboard beneath his feet, it was really just an extension of himself. Gliding along the crystal clear waters surrounding Mystery Island gave him an elated feeling. Who needs the sky when you can fly on water?

Secure the houses! Stay close to your family! Head toward the mountain! Tadayas heard the ringing of his father's words in his head, fighting above the roar of the winds. But that was hours ago. The Lutari's small face was battered and sore from the stinging rain and the slap of wind, drenched to the bone from the hurricane. But that was hours ago. His people fled all around him, abandoning their homes after taking necessities, clutching children to their sides and running through the jungle. The rains and winds bore down there as well although the vegetation did little to alleviate the howling storm. But that was hours ago. Tadayas felt his twin sister's hand, slick from the rain but warm nonetheless, entwined in his own as they ran from the oncoming tsunami. But that too, was hours ago.

The young boy didn't know what happened, it was all a maddening blur. He was sure it was his fault he never saw her again. Their village was situated some ways up from the beach, although the lapping waters surrounding Mystery Island were literally a stone's throw away. Island storms were always unpredictable, and this one descended upon them in the dead of night. At first strong winds were just kicking up around them and the night's watch thought nothing of it. Until rain started to fall, softly at first, then it pelted the ground below. Although the moon shone brightly overhead the sheets of rain and gusts that threatened to knock you off your feet made it difficult to see more than five feet in front of you. However the dark shadow of the wave could be seen, some ways off in the churning ocean, but growing closer and larger by the moment. Already the sea had risen to flood some of the closer huts, sending icy spray everywhere, and the wind ripped at the roofs.

Tadayas had been shaken awake roughly by his father's large hands. His twin sister, younger by a few minutes, sat next to him rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "Quick, my children," he heard his father say. "You must make for the mountain safehouse, a hurricane and great wave are upon us. Follow the others through the jungle." The chief's children were only eight years old but they understood the severe tone in their father's gruff voice. As the sleep left their small bodies shouts and chaos could be heard all around them. Tadayas took a moment to stuff some provisions into a small bag as his sister did the same. Their father was long gone to brave the storm outside and attend to his people as needed. "Come on, Hoku," Tadayas urged his sister. She was smaller than him, and a scrawny little thing. "One seco-EEK!" A loud crash could be heard over the din of the storm and his sister screamed. "Something must have gotten knocked over," Tadayas said as he grabbed his sister's hand. "We have to leave, now." Rain had already been seeping into their hut and outside was a whirlwind. Sand, rocks, dead leaves, unattended objects...everything flew through the air madly. The moment they stepped outside the small comfort of their home the wind tore at their clothes and the rain drenched them in a matter of moments.

Making their way up the beach was a terrible battle. People were screaming and babies were wailing, only adding to the chaotic environment. Torrents of water fell from the dark sky and Tadayas could barely take a step without almost falling over. Hokuli'i shuddered at his side, her fingernails digging into his hand. Entering the jungle was no relief as water attempted to drown the land and winds ripped plants and trees from the ground. The village had made a shelter by the base of Techo mountain for times like this. Getting there, however, was the real task. As the storm tossed them about it was impossible to keep in the right direction. The sky was a a single puddle of darkness and permitted no view of the guiding stars. Suddenly, Tadayas felt his sister stop their mad sprint, almost pulling him to the ground.

Hoku, what are you doing? Come on," Tadayas yelled, barely even hearing himself. "TK, I have to go back! I forgot Mum's painting!" He felt her trying to tear away from him to run back to the beach. Tadayas knew exactly what his sister was talking about. "Are you mad? Forget it, it'll probably still be there when we go back! Stop being stupid!" He shouted at her, tugging her in the other direction. "No, no, no!" she screeched. It was a lovely painting, treasured by their family. A traveling painter wanting to capture beauties of Neopia had given it to their parents long before they were born. Tadayas and Hokuli'i never knew their mother as she died bringing them into the world. It was the only way they could look upon her face and see her smile. The twins shouted back and forth, both yanking each other in opposite directions. Finally the rain saw fit to make Tadayas lose his grip as she slipped between his fingers. "Hokuli'i!" He ran after her small shape blindly but he wasn't sure if he could catch her. She always boasted that she was the fastest in their village although their friend Makani begged to differ. His sister disappeared into the dark forest as he slipped in the mud and was scratched by flying branches.

Soon the little Lutari was quite lost and his sister was nowhere to be found. His voice was hoarse from shouting over the unrelenting storm and he shivered from the cold seeping into his skin. It felt like he had been wandering the jungle for hours. Water continued to run down his body in large streams as he pushed through the jungle, strength leaving him. A low vine tripped him and Tadayas hurtled to the ground. Tasting mud in his mouth the rain beat down on him as the last of his strength disappeared. His eyes closed slowly and he gave in to fatigue, his sister's name still on his lips.

TK! TK!" Tadayas stirred, half sunken into the mud floor. He ached all over and shivered as he slowly tried to push himself up. "TK, where are you?" How long had it been? Where was he? The storm had passed and the air was clear although drops of water clung to everything and the slightest movements were met by showers of rain water. "TK!" The voice was closer now, and Tadayas recognized it as his father's. "Father, I am here!" he called hoarsely, swaying on his weak legs. The bushes rustled and his father emerged, a weary look upon his face. The large chief scooped up his son and hugged him tightly. "TK, I feared you were lost too," he said solemnly. Tadayas clung to his father. "I'm sorry, Father...what happened?" "Most of the village got through safely, we are missing a few...the destruction is great. Everyone will have to stay in the shelter until we rebuild." They walked back to the base of the mountain and were greeted with tired faces, some grieving. Everyone was deeply affected by the storm.

Tadayas shakily walked over to where some of his friends were sitting. Looking around he asked, "Where's Hoku?" He turned to his father for an answer when she didn't pop out chattering away as she always did. The chief's eyes were dark when he said "Your sister is still unaccounted for, TK. Search parties are combing through the jungle for her and the other missing but they could be anywhere. It could be days before we locate them." Tadayas swallowed the words slowly and Makani, a tall Zafara who was two years older, placed a hand on his shoulder reassuringly. Tadayas tried to sound hopeful and said softly "She'll turn up soon." He hoped he spoke the truth.

Days went by and turned into weeks. Soon they were back on the beach in freshly built homes. More often than not the missing turned up with no life in them. Tadayas didn't know what was worse, for Hokuli'i to be found dead or not at all. One day Tadayas found a shiny pendant washed up on the beach, golden and in the shape of a star. His eyes grew large as he bent down to pick it up. "Father, Father!" he shouted as he dashed to his father's side. "Look, it's Hoku's," he said breathlessly. "Indeed, where did you find it, TK?" "Down by the shore over there!" The two of them along with some others scoured the shoreline, hoping to find their missing family member. The sun dropped below the horizon but she was nowhere to be found.

His father looked older than he should be and had sadly come to terms with the loss of his daughter. Tadayas, on the other hand, refused to believe she was gone. After a month had come and gone it was finally time to give a proper send-off for the departed. As per their customs the entire village gathered together before a burning bonfire. Some were openly weeping while others stood stony faced. Mazhura lost her husband, Pohani and Silary's daughter's corpse washed ashore a few days ago, Jhi'mini's brother was missing. There were others lost as well but Tadayas refused to mourn for his sister. "She's not dead!" he shouted. "She'll come running out of the jungle any moment, I swear!" His father looked at him sadly shaking his head. "Our little star is gone, my son. She's with your mother now." "No! You're lying!" he screamed defiantly, hot tears rolling down his face. "TK, you're not the only one who misses her," Makani said sullenly. "Shut up, shut up! How could you give up like that then, you don't know!" The Lutari gave the older boy a shove, now weeping ferociously. "Enough!" Tadayas's father roared. He grabbed his son firmly by the arms and gave him a stern look. "We are not the only family who has suffered losses, I have no tolerance for disrespectful children." Tadayas sobbed weakly, breaking away after a few moments and dashing across the sand.

Years passed and life moved on. The golden star hung from his neck ever since, a bitter reminder of the sister he once had. Now and then he had nightmares of the flooding jungle, met with different horrors each time. Sometimes he drowned from the rain, or the mud would eat him up in darkness. She's still alive, he told himself everyday. One day I'll sail away from here and visit every country in the world. I'll find her, and I'll bring her home.
