A new Breed

Whenever I discover another Uni Artist that appears they will stick around, I can't help but get excited! I peruse their pet lookups, their pet pages and hunt for their art to admire.
It's always refreshing to see a new art style, and when you compare artists who study similar subjects, you appreciate the tweaks that make the artists differ.

Take Flights aim is to link Uni artists with other Uni artists to chat with, and to inspire the beginners to start arting about their Uni!

Cosar came home on the 4th of December, 2013, and Take Flight! was created the very same day!
I'm not alone in my adoration for Uni artists, and Take Flight! makes it easy to discover more about each individual.

Each artist here begun from the ground up at some point! So if you're daunted by the fantastic artwork and writings of the established listed here, don't be! Horses can be difficult to art about, but if you settle in a style that isn't at all anatomically correct, no one will care! Anatomy only takes art so far. It's up to the artist to create from there!

Art isn't just Painting!

No! Art comprises of many mediums (drawing/painting/pottery/writing/photography are a few)! The most popular is drawing and painting from what I've seen on neo, but an artist is simply someone who creates. Writers and other mediums are still artists, so I will not exclude them from this directory!

Each uni image you see will take you to their pet lookup. You'll be able to explore any unfinished petpages from there, but any finished petpage links are included with each artist!

Listed with Permission

Each artist who is listed here is ONLY listed with their permission.

All I ask is that those who are listed please take one of the buttons on the bottom of this page to paste on their User Lookup profile so others may see!

Want to take home some art?

The only art you are allowed to take and credit (unless otherwise stated by the artist who owns that artwork) are adoptables. Some are listed here with each artist, but you can find more here:

Any artwork taken from someone else and claimed as your own is forbidden. Any artwork taken from someone else and entered into any competition of any form is also forbidden.
Please, if you want to take some art, start arting yourself! You may end up so good at your own art style that inspires more to start!

Sealla

Favourite Uni and Why?
Opearl. I adore her name due to my occupation, the fact that I actually brainstormed it myself, and I love her character, design and personality.

Sealla's Uni

A tip for the beginners!
Don't forget to add a bit of shine to your Uni's coat! Think about where the sunlight is and how it would bounce off the different muscles.

Favourite Uni and Why?
Oof, that's a tough one. I'd have to say Vahallula is my favorite because I really like the color scheme of Zombie pets. I'm also quite proud of her design and character.

Reference photos help tremendously!! I use them all the time because horse anatomy still confuses me.

Kevin/BG

Favourite Uni and Why?
My favorite? Do I even need to say it? *cuddles Urasina* As for why, well... she was my first pet, she's my most developed pet, and I've put so much work into her that it can't be measured.

Kevin's Uni

A tip for the beginners!
Don't look to reality and RL horses. Let your imagination gallop free!

You've been exploring Sahkmet and the surrounding areas for a couple of days now, but this is the first time you've wandered into this residential neighborhood outside the city walls. Most of the Nehomes here are falling apart and haven't been inhabited in years. But this one is large, well-kept, and sports an amazing front yard garden. You've never seen this much greenery in the Lost Desert before. You can't help but stop and just look at it all.
It's then, however, that you hear wings beating overhead. You turn to look as a Uni descends towards you, landing in the street not too far from where you're standing, and looking you over. You've never seen a Uni like this one. She appears to be a Speckled Uni, but her coat pattern is more like that of a Paint pony. Her silver horn is short, thick, and sharply curved at the tip. But the most terrifying part of this strange Uni are her wings. They're not normal Uni wings; they're massive dragon wings tipped with deadly-looking spines.
Your first instinct is to run, but you hesitate. There is a mark on the Uni's chest, a glowing golden ring that expands and contracts as you watch it. It's calming to look at. And then there's her eyes. They're a clear and beautiful blue, but there's no hostility in them. Instead, there's a look of kindness and warmth. You realize that this Uni, though frightening on the outside, is something much greater on the inside.

Magneto

Favourite Uni and Why?
Oh gosh my favourite, I guess that would be Psyche. He was the first uni I created and painted so I suppose that gives him a certain amount of sentimental value.

Hmm, I would say references are your friend. Look at images, look at different angles, watch video and see how the horses move. The number one thing that people get wrong is when they have incorrect bone and muscle placement in drawings. When that happens the whole scale and movement gets thrown off. Once you are comfortable with both your images will be much easier to draw.

Vixen

Favourite Uni and Why?
My favourite is probably Osryn, despite the fact hes a faerie stallion tehe, because I've had him for a very very long time. He was gifted to me as my first ever painted pet and I still cherish him to this day.

Look closer! Don't be afraid to use references - there's no shame in copying from photographs despite what some people like to say, especially when you're learning. Knowing your anatomy and how the horse moves is also extremely helpful - I can't stress this enough! Do heaps of observational studies and you will see your drawings improve in no time. Lastly: don't stress about style, it will develop naturally.

At this current moment in time it has to be Geppetu, he is incredibly fun to draw and roleplay with, his overall character design and personality certainly makes him something special.

Dizzy

Favourite Uni and Why?
Veutara is my one and only. I didn't get another because well...I haven't come across another that inspired me. despite having a bunch of art books, horses I've ALWAYS struggled with.

All I can say is pretty much what everyone else will say...ya know, keep drawing and practicing, be open to constructive criticism, etc. Ha. You should see my first uni drawing of Veutara. Its freaking horrible man. But I have it up anyway on me art page. You know why? Because I know some out there think you have to start out amazing to draw well...that you need fancy programs and stuff. They feel like they can't do it.
I thought the same. But I finally learned to stop caring. Don't worry bout being good enough or having fancy tools at your fingertips... if you want to draw, then just draw! Doesn't matter if your uni looks like a footstool with wings. If that was your best drawing then be proud of that footstool uni and ride it into the sunset!

Shoy

Favourite Uni and Why?
Aada is my one and only Uni because I never felt the need to have more than her; plus she's mean enough that she'd probably hurt me if I tried! I've got a lot of characters running around in my head, but Aadala is the only one that made sense as a Uni, so my one and only Uni she will stay.

Shoy's Uni

A tip for the beginners!
As everyone will tell you, practice is important. I would also recommend using references until you are sort of comfortable with horse anatomy; after that, just have fun and don't take yourself too seriously!

Shade

Favourite Uni and Why?
Cruxeo is my only one. I feel as though war horses are overlooked as part of battle. They were fearless steeds who were obedient and faithful. I only own one uni because I really wanted a war-horse character.

Shade's Uni

A tip for the beginners!
My best horse-artist tip is reference and practice! I know pretty much any artist will say this. But referencing off of real photos- or better yet real horses- is the best way to improve your sense of equine anatomy and movement. And practice! Practice! Practice! You should (or shouldn't XD) see some of my first horse drawings. They were horrible with stick-straight legs and circle faces. But through practice I have improved so much. Of course, there is always room for improvement.

Chloe

Favourite Uni and Why?
I only have one Uni right now, because I adore the designs of maraquan uni. There's no real reason as to why i don't have more.. my accounts are just mainly filled up with Ixi at the moment.

A tip for the beginners!
I encourage everyone to practice and experiment with different styles and practice drawing realistic horses/uni before stylizing your work.
