Updates

2nd of April

I'm going to put off updating for awhile until I open Alias. Also, I have a busy term ahead of me so.
Fixed all the floats and 'back' signs.
Moved old updates to archives.

hang on

Here are some things you should be aware of before you start on your fascinating adventure. I advise you to read them carefully without skimming.

Notes are basically explanations or suggestions I have for you.
Rules on the other hand, as you are well aware about, are important.

Notes

Some people seemingly have no idea on how to place a credit appropriately. So here it is - copy and paste the code:
Site name thought up at Alias.

Do I seem paranoid about linking back? Hmm.. You can say that I take pride in my ideas, and that I'd like to increase the number of sites with quality names out there.

Please refrain from accusing Alias of plagiarising, or having the same names as other untaken names sites.

I will try my best to remove those sort of names to avoid confusion, but do keep in mind that I do not reference any other sites when thinking up a name. Neither do I get any sort of 'inspiration' from them, as some call it.

You are welcome to send a neomail and give me a heads up though, if too many names mirror another site's.

Also, when choosing a name, don't rush it. Take your time to select one that best suits your site.

Note that all english names here are spelt and pronounced the British way.

Name categories are the types of name for a site - such as themed, definitive, or random names. For more information, click here.

Rules

Send me a neomail if you have taken any name directly, so I can take it off the list. If you don't inform me in time, someone else may come along, reserve/take the name and open the site before you do.

Please credit Alias if you have taken a 4D name, with a text or button link back. For the others, it is appreciated, but not compulsory.

If you have requested a name, and decide to use it, you are likewise required to link back.

Alchemy

Basics

Pronunciation
[ˈælkəmi; al-kuh-mee]

Alchemy
1. A form of chemistry and speculative philosophy practiced in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and concerned principally with discovering methods for transmuting baser metals into gold and with finding a universal solvent and an elixir of life.

Variation(s)
Alchemic/Alchemy/Alquemie/Alchymia/Alconomye

Advanced

Elaboration
You've probably heard of alchemy as the study of turning lead into gold, but it is in fact more - a mix of elementary forms, medicinal properties and finding balance - an art. Its such a mysterious yet savory name that you can name almost any site with it.

Triva
The defining goals of alchemy are often given as the transmutation of common metals into gold (known as chrysopoeia), the creation of a panacea, and the discovery of a universal solvent. Alchemy also includes practices in relation to Hermetic principles, magic, religion, mythology, and spirituality.

This is a summary given by H.J. Sheppard:
Alchemy is the art of liberating parts of the Cosmos from temporal existence and achieving perfection which, for metals is gold, and for man, longevity, then immortality and, finally, redemption. Material perfection was sought through the action of a preparation (Philosopher's Stone for metals; Elixir of Life for humans), while spiritual ennoblement resulted from some form of inner revelation or other enlightenment (Gnosis, for example, in Hellenistic and western practices).

Variation(s)

Advanced

Elaboration
The name can be best used for a review site to emphasise the precise and methodical system of analysing another's page.

It is also pretty good for tutorials/guides which would tell a reader at a glance that the site would be analysing and breaking down details and then piecing them together again in a simpler form.

[əˈpɒkəlɪps; uh-pok-uh-lips]

Definition(s)

Type
Untaken names, review sites, competitions, news/magazines, guides, tutorials

Variation(s)
Apokálypsis (Greek), Kaluptein (to disclose)

Advanced

Elaboration
Since this name means 'to reveal' in most cases, it is best suited for a news/magazine, competition or review site name since you'd be disclosing news, winners, or critiques of another site. Its pretty okay for a guide/tutorial site as you are kind of 'leaking' the steps on how to do stuff on it. If you want to own an untaken name site thats something like Alias (full of definitions), you could choose this name as well - for you'd be enlightening others on the meanings of names.

Triva
In the context of Biblical understanding, the revelation (apocalypse) of a meaningful future may be made through a dream.

Today, this word is commonly used in reference to any prophetic revelation or so-called End Time scenario, or to the end of the world in general.

Nothing too explanative about this name. It can be used to name a funky site you have that may do things differently, uniquely backwards. Perhaps a guide or tutorial that has an uncommon teaching method.

Triva

Origin
Uncertain (?) (1695–1705)

Type

Variation(s)
Bumbaze, Bombaze

Advanced

Elaboration
What an amazingly bewildering name. There are a load of sites you can use this name on, but I think its best suited for guides, tutorials and graphic sites.

Triva
Bamboozle is one of those words that has been confounding etymologists for centuries. No one knows for sure what its origins are.

It is not known for certain, but this sense might have emerged under the influence of the Scottish word bumbaze (or bombaze), meaning "to confuse," similar in both sound and meaning. Given the befuddling qualities of alcohol, it's not too surprising to find that, in the 1800's, bamboozle showed up on college campuses as a slang term for "drunk.

Its very longevity stands as a reminder that you can't predict or enforce the fate of a word.

Variation(s)
Beliefs

Advanced

Elaboration
Perhaps you'd like to subtly hint for viewers, or requesters to trust in your skills or writing. It would be a nice theme for a competition site too. I do not encourage you to use it any way in a religious sense however.

Triva
This is exactly what makes it easy for people to lie without being detected. Wholly believing in something makes it the truth in the speaker's view, and hence not clearly distinguished as an untruth. Truth is undefined in belief as it is rarely based on fact. Or if it is, its fact that you believe in. Just my tuppence on this.

Origin
Blind + Sight

Type

Variation(s)
None

Advanced

Elaboration
Its best used for review sites to hint that a site owner may not consciously know/are blind to the flaws and strengths of their sites. The same can be said if you use it for guides or tutorial sites. To understand more, take a look at the 'Triva' section below.

Triva
Personally, this is one of my favourite words.

Blindsight is a phenomenon where a 'blind' person is able to unconsciously yet accurately guess the location of light or movement of objects despite being unable to see. It may seem like instinct, a reflex or sixth sense, but there is a scientific explanation to it.

The simple explanation would be that what's damaged isn't a person's ability to see, but the part of their brain that perceives what they see. Which means that a 'blind' person may be able to see subconsciously, but they cannot understand what they see because their brain doesn't process it correctly. A huge pity really.

A simple name, for almost any kind of site. I'd suggest it for graphic sites or directories though, as it seems more normal. It would go well for a competition site, to parade a flurry of activity.

Triva
It has been stereotyped by some to resemble a winter hurricane. It is obviously untrue as hurricanes are fueled by warm, moist climate over oceans, not cold and dry land storms.

Type

Variation(s)

Advanced

Elaboration
You've probably heard of alchemy as the study of turning lead into gold, but it is in fact more - a mix of elementary forms, medicinal properties and finding balance - an art. So an Alchemy Room would be a place for you to conjure up your art. Its a good name for a graphics/art site if you wish to display your graphics/art as the result of possible alchemic experiments. Untaken name sites can be named using the same theory. In story-mode of course, or have your site themed accordingly. It could also be used for link directories.

Triva
An Alchemy Room is for alchemists to experiment with chemistry and logic. These places are usually devoid of magic or banish all thoughts magic, though some alchemists do a mix of both to achieve fascinating and impossible results. Alchemy also includes practices in relation to religion, mythology, and spirituality.

Archived Updates

31st of March

Not much to say, except that I'm currently chewing my lunch while typing this update one-handed. And that I'm finally adding names. c:
Added navigation to site names.

29th of March

I've been making up a great deal of new names, so expect them to be added this week! By the way... I'VE FOUND THE MOST AWESOME PAGE 8D It's on books, and hosted by Jackie! It offers recommended reads/book reviews for you to read or submit. You guys know I'm insane about books and stuff, so I'm currently jumping around like a mad rabbit. And if you didn't, now you know, so don't give me that is-that-kid-really-weird-or-what look. Because I am. And I exist to creep you out.
Now affiliates with Page Turner!
Listed at Clockwork Directory and Pixie Dust.

28th of March

Yay! Thanks to Turnip, I've finally gotten the bullet alignment right. Actually it was done a few days ago but I forgot to update. /shot Anyway, we have another affiliate!
Now affiliates with Memory Chip!
Bullet alignment dealt with.

29th of March

Back from camp, phew! I've put Alias off for too long omg. I'll be working on it this week, and hopefully get it up by the next. But no guarantees, since its the start of the next term in two days. Oh yes, and we have a new affiliate! Justine's new untaken names site in the making seems very promising with a great deal of names and a handy navigation system by type, like Asura's. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates on its opening!
Now affiliates with Stargaze!

14th of March

The March holidays are starting soon. A week only term-break though, and I have extra-curriculum camp for three days. Plus there's homework. So. Much. Homework. My dear teachers and seniors, don't you get what a break is? You do not give homework, tell us to lead a camp and call it a break. Bloody hell.
Categorised the site names.

4th of March

Hmm... I've decided not to release the names until I'm ready to open Alias. So I'll just save them and the coding on a plain text editor.
Added the sitely area

2nd of March

I've got so much inspiration for names right now, I hope it lasts. And I really love some that I came up with. :D Except now I have a problem finding a name for something of my own, rofl. Quite ironic, really.
Added most rules and stuff

Achievements

Here are the stuff Alias has achieved since its opening.

Suggest

Feel inspired by something? Have an insightful name you wish to contribute for someone's site? Why not suggest it here? Alias is looking for the best quality names to analyse, interpret, and explicate! If you believe that you're one of the few up for it, take a look down there.

Terms, Conditions, Advice and a Warning.

You agree that when you submit a name, it becomes property of Alias and you give up all claim on it. Hence, I will be able to edit it or use it in any way I wish. Whether you will be credited or not and how will be up to me. This is because I can't possibly be sticking up credits for everyone on each link. Likewise, crediting you directly will add a complication I would wish to avoid if the meaning is not what you may have implied.

Perhaps I seem like I am discouraging you to give me your suggestions. However, let me tell you this: if you don't wish to suggest a name because you love creating names, but do it just for the credit, I wouldn't advise you to suggest names for Alias. All names here are created with pure passion and true sincerity. Literature may not be my favourite subject, but I admire the subtleties I can grasp from each word alone. I encourage you to tell me what you think or feel the name should mean, maybe even from different points of view.

Of course, I would most probably include an inspired by sentence or two. Remember though, after all, what Alias is for is to help others to find ideal and most suitable names for their sites. Not to show off the amount of names listed nor how pretty a name is.

Send it

If you haven't been scared away to another site, or strongly believe that you have a name worth sharing, fill in this simple form and send it to Summer! I appreciate all names sent in. So even if most will be refined, and only a couple will be posted up as it is, none will be ignored. In Alias, each name is a buried treasure, waiting to be discovered.

Here I will tell you how I categorise the type of names for each site in Alias.

my stuff

Probably pointless to write this paragraph, but this page is to put stuff I want to keep away from prying eyes. They're basically stuff that would look awkward and out of place on a site like this. Like resources or ideas I want to remember or random notes. On all of my sites there are hidden pages accessible only to those who know the hashtag for it. Now it sounds like Twitter o_o and my endless babbling for nobody but myself unless you're more of an obsessed stalker than me.
