intro

cycles

Golden Neopia works with a cycle system. This means that we aren't a true SOTM; there can be up to three cycles per month depending on how long they take.

Each cycle has three separate stages: nominations, voting, and results. During nominations, you can nominate your site or a site owned by another user. If you are not the owner, the user will be contacted to confirm they would like to participate in Golden Neopia. Nominations will last 1-3 weeks depending on how fast spots fill up. During voting, a user can vote for one site in each category. You may only vote once per cycle. During results, the winners are released, rankings are updated, and nominations become open.

classic category play

During a classic category cycle, a site will compete with other sites like it. No pixel site will be competing against a CSS guide. There are separate categories for each site type so they can compete against sites most like them. Classic categories allow for fair competition among site types and allows site owners see how popular they are compared to other sites of their type. Classic category votes count toward site rankings. The site with the most votes in their category wins.

divisional play

During a divisional cycle, sites are classified into three divisions: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Sites will compete with all other site types. Up to 15 sites can compete in each division.

Gold division sites have been open for 5+ months, 2500+ visitors, and very high quality content.

Silver division sites have been open for 2+ months, 700+ visitors, and medium to high-quality content.

Bronze division sites have been open between 1 week and 2 months, 350+ visitors, and medium quality content.

Divisional play gives sites a chance to see how they fare against other sites in their division. It also allows for the younger sites to understand what goes in to making a gold division site.

Divison play votes count toward site rankings.

special categories

Special categories can be featured during classic category play or divisional play. Special categories feature categories such as: Best Layout, Most Innovative Idea, Friendliest Owner, etc. Users nominate the sites to be placed in these categories specifically. Each special category features five sites. Special category votes do not count toward site ranking.

winning

At Golden Neopia, there are technically two wins. The category winners are the winners in each category. From the category winner, we get the overall winner which will be the featured site on Golden Neopia until the next overall winner is announced.

Once a site wins, they have to wait a cycle before participating again. For example: Site A wins Cycle 1, therefore it has to sit out Cycle 2. Site A can participate again in Cycle 3.

ranking

GN does have a ranking feature, but it works differently than most rankings.

The rank you earn depends on the number of votes you get at GN (total of all votes for all cycles participated in). If the premade site, Site A, got 16 votes in cycle 5 and all the highest number of votes for a premade site is currently 15, Site A would now be the number one ranked premades site.

user contributions

Golden Neopia is a user run site. So, it counts completely on contributions from users to run. Everything in Golden Neopia must be voted on. I, as the site owner, do not nominate, vote, or decide on any rankings myself. Golden Neopia is a reflection of what is well-liked or disliked in the eyes of Neopians. The eight users with the most contributions are recognized on the site. The top contributor at the end of each month gets a layout pack from the site owner.

site event

let's start a revolution

April of 2014's site event is Let's Start a Revolution!

I was a site maker in the legendary days when Cass was queen and Soroptimist Directory was a hub for all of Neopia. In that time, the site community and the rest of Neopia were intertwined like a family. Sites were thriving and site owners really enjoyed updating and running their sites. When I come on Neo now, I don't see that same community. I see a community that is dead, that doesn't know what to do with itself. We need a revolution to start our Renaissance.

Throughout the month of April, I challenge the public of Neopia to send in their critiques and comments of the current site community. As a whole, we want to bring change to Neopia and we need all users to help us figure out which direction to go in.

In your neomail, please include your idea, suggestion, or critique and why you think it would be helpful. What does the site community need to change? What do we need more of? Is there someone or something you look to for inspiration? Is it just us or is it Neo as a whole?

Click here to send in your comment, idea, or suggestion!

jackie (jackiieex3) says...

I think that we need more younger people creating sites. I know a lot of the people in the site-making world are older and, therefore, more busy with schooling/other aspects of their lives that take precedent over running sites. I feel that people in, let's say, early years of high school have more time on their hands because of a lighter workload and, therefore, will be able to invest more time in maintaining sites.

malisha (malisha9) says...

When a new site-owner comes in, where do they go first? What we need is a place for aspiring site-owners to meet other experienced site-owners and get to know them as well as their sites. All the communication done between them is through neomail, usually to confirm your news has been posted or your site has been listed. Little interaction between site-owners is established so can you really say you're acquainted with another site-owner? Is it possible to be successful without talking to another site-owner who is sucessful and can provide advice for your site? With a place to begin, it might encourage new people to join the community.

faq

What made you decide to reopen Golden Neopia again?
I always thought Golden Neopia was the most unique and most fun competition site around and I wanted to bring it back so more sites could experience it.

How did you keep track of votes, contributions, etc?
I use spreadsheets in Excel to make tables and sort them to fit my needs.

What counts as a 'user submission'?
Any GN or ranking nomination, and any GN or ranking vote.

What do you mean by 'pioneered the modern SOTM'?
GN was one of the first SOTM-like sites around. It was created before competition sites even had a category at Soroptimist. It really boosted the popularity and idea of competition sites. GN was also where the inspiration of ranking sites came from.

How did you make your layout?
It's mainly CSS coding. If you need coding help check out my coding guide Decoded.

competition site mini-guide

Running a competition site is no easy task. As an experienced site competition owner, I'd like to share with you some things I have learned over the years.

NUMBER ONE: Advertise!

If you run a competition site, or any site for that matter, advertising is key. Places like Always Connected are great for spreading the news that your competition has open entrance. Personally, I always turn to the Help Chat for advertising. Start a new topic and camp out there. I've had advertising boards last a month. You just have to remember to bump the board once day.

By advertising open entrance or open voting, you publicly declaring that Yes, my site is current accepting entrances or votes!. Without advertisement, you have to rely on people to personally VISIT your site.

NUMBER TWO: What's so special?
What makes your competition site different from the slew of other competition sites? Nowadays everyone does BOTM, SOTM, COTM, etc. You have to give your visitors something new to participate in. I firmly believe that Golden Neopia gets the amount of visitors it does because I run it much differently than other competition sites. Most places only the owner of the site can enter their site, but at Golden Neopia people nominate their favorite site. Make your site unique. Perhaps the winners can win a custom graphic or layout. Coming up with ideas that will make people want to participate, create a higher rate of traffic to your site.

More coming soon!
