Please be aware that the prices listed here are not 100% accurate. The market is in constant fluctuation and keeping every single price up-to-date is a hard work to do by a single person. The purpose of this page is to serve only as a guide, not to dictaminate the prices. I highly recomend to double-check prior to any transaction.

Secret Laboratory Map

The Secret Laboratory is a hidden place where the mad scientist can zap your pets. Zapping your pets will change them in many ways.

The only way to get acces to the Lab Ray is completing the puzzle by having the nine different pieces.

After completing the Secret Laboratory Map you get some neopoints, from 8k to 10k and the permanent access to the Lab Ray!.

You can also get an avatar by using the lab ray.

Pwned by the Lab!

You get this avatar when the lab ray changes the species of your pet.

Original Treasure Map

When you assemble the nine pieces of the Original Map you can win approximately 10k neopoints and five random restockable items.

Be careful! This is a one-time use map, so think it twice before completing it.

Is the gamble worth the neopoints?

Just like any other gamble in neopets, there is a tiny change of winning something worth millions so it's more likely you lose rather than winning.

What type of items can I get?

You can get almost anything that restocks from neopian shops. The most remarkable items are Morphing Potions, Draik Eggs, Stamps, some r99 items, Gourmet and Kad foods.

If you're still curious, check my list of some of the possible prizes.

Spooky Treasure Map

When you assemble the nine pieces of the Spooky Treasure Map you can win approximately 10k neopoints and nine random spooky foods..

Be careful! This is a one-time use map, so think it twice before completing it.

Is the gamble worth the neopoints?

In my opinion this is one of the worst maps to gamble with, almost every spooky food is worth much less than the map itself.

What type of items can I get?

Spooky foods, spooky foods and more spooky foods. The most valuable item you can win is a Snorkle Snout and this is the only reason why some people still gamble with this but the profit margin is still very small.

If you're still curious, check my list of some of the possible prizes.

Learning How to Search & Buy

As you may know, it is cheaper to buy the nine piece separately. I know it's hard and tedious to get a complete map buying piece by piece, but don't worry I am here to help you.

I made this section to show you my own method to buy a full set, which usually takes me around 30 minutes.

To buy a full set you will need around 900k so I recommend you to start earning neopoints. Here is a guide that can help you. I suggest you to start buying all the pieces once you have all the neopoints needed because this makes it faster.

Note that prices have changed since I made this section, check the prices section for the current going prices.

Alright so let's start, we have three ways to search the nine pieces of the Secret Laboratory Map (you should use at least two of them).

Shop Wizard

This is an easy and quick way to find buyable pieces (under 100k). The SW will search trough different shops comparing prices.

I would recommend you to search through the Shop Wizard once you have got all the unbuyable pieces, because this way is the quickest one.

Just to let you know, there are shops that have all the buyable pieces so you won't need to search over and over again. This will save you a lot of time but this method may be a little more expensive.

First off, type "Secret Laboratory Map" on the text box and click on "Search":.

Refresh a few times until you see some like this:.

Compare prices, check the pieces in stock. there are many of them, not just one. This usually means that the shop has more pieces for sale, most of the time they have all the buyable pieces.

Five pieces in the shop! This means you don't need to search anymore.

If the shop doesn't have all the buyable pieces then you can repeat the process, it shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes.

Pros
  • You could find all the buyable pieces in one shop with no need to refresh a lot of times.
  • It is easy and somewhat quick.
  • You can compare prices.
  • You may snipe [buying and item for a lot cheaper than it is actually worth] some UB pieces.
Cons
  • You need to be patient because it can be tedious.

Trading Post

This way may require a bit more time. Once you have made an offer, you don't have to do anything but wait.

I would recommend you to search the unbuyable pieces on the TP because there are plenty of them.

Start by typing "Secret Laboratory Map" in the text box and click on "Newest" If you choose "Identical to my phrase" the TP will only show trade lots that include the piece number one..

Now start by looking for the cheaper pieces. There is no need to go to the last page of the TP..

If the seller states the price is FIRM it means that they won't accept lower offers.

I don't recommend to mail the seller, just offer and wait until they accept or reject your offer. This makes the process a bit faster because you don't have to wait their response.

If they reject or cancel the trade, you can search again and offer on another lot.

Pros
  • You will find a lot of pieces.
  • It allows you to find lots that include only the piece number one (this works only with that piece).
Cons
  • You can't offer more than 800k on a single lot.
  • Once you have made the offer you need to wait to your offer to be accepted or rejected.
  • The seller can cancel the lot, if this happens you will need to search again.
  • Prices may vary a lot, so do a research first.

Auction House

I would recommend you to buy the most expensive pieces through the auctions. Sometimes you can also get buyable pieces for a good price.

Start by clicking on the "Next 20" link until you find a piece. If you don't find any piece wait for around two minutes and start again.

NEVER USE THE AUCTION GENIE. Why? Because the auction genie only shows the 30 cheapest pieces in the auctions, and most of them don't end as quick as you may want.

If you find a piece you can bid and wait until the auction ends.

After the auction closes nobody can place a bid.

Congratulations, you have won the auction! Now you can relax and wait for TNT to neomail you, usually you wait no more than five minutes. You will receive a TNT neomail like this one:.

And the piece you have just won will appear in your inventory.

Now I recommend you to keep it in your safety deposit box because it would be tragic if the Pant Devil (or any other random event) decides to appear at that moment.

Don't be disappointed if you don't win, usually the people who snipe map pieces are resellers, so once the auction has been processed you can check the winner's trades. Perhaps you can get a good deal.

Pros
  • You may get lucky and you can snipe a lab map piece.
  • Usually you spend less neopoints than buying them from the Trading Post.
Cons
  • You need to be very patient to find a piece for a good price.
  • You need to be very attentive so you don't miss a cheap piece while you're distracted.
  • Sniping requires a bit of luck and experience.
  • Most of times you won't win.

Conclusion

Everyone has its own method to buy a complete laboratory, this one has worked perfectly for me and that is the reason why I wanted to show it to you.

I'm experienced at this, that is why this method is very easy to me. I've developed my own order to do it quicker. It may take a few minutes or even hours. don't despair!.

  1. I buy some of the unbuyable pieces, not all of them unless it is a very good deal, from the Auction House.
  2. I go to the Trading Post and I start searching for the remaining unbuyable pieces. You can also search through the "Newest 20" and sometimes you may save a few minutes, it is up to you.
  3. Once I have all the unbuyable pieces, I start searching on the Shop Wizard. As I said, I'm experienced so I've bookmarked some of the shops that always have all the buyable pieces.

Using this method, you will save approximately 100k.

When you enter the Secret Laboratory, you will have the chance of choose which of your pets will be zapped.

You can only zap one of your pets daily.

The Lab Ray can change your pets in many ways, this changes are random. Many people say it isn't random at all, but this hasn't been confirmed yet.

When the Lab Ray changes your pet's species, it will turn it into a basic colored pet.

The table at the right includes all the possible zaps.

NOTE: This percentages are relative. I gathered all this information of 100 zaps of only one pet.

Learn more in the Lab Ray Diary.

*There have been cases of Draiks and Krawks obtained using the Lab Ray, however this has not happened for a long time. TNT has mentioned on the editorial (issue #433, 9th question) that not all the specias are available through the Lab Ray.

How can I get the pieces?

Each actual map piece is an item, and this means that it can be stolen, traded, sold, auctioned, disintegrated, and so on...

There are many ways to obtain a piece of almost every map.

  • The quick way is... buying them (You can read further information in the Searching section).
  • You can also get pieces of almost every map (the exceptions are Underwater Map and the Space Map, because they are retired) through Random Events, but this occurs rarely.
  • The easiest way to get Secret Laboratory Map pieces and Treasure Map pieces is playing Keyquest, there is a small chance to get them by redeeming gold keys.
  • Spinning the Wheel of Extravagance can award you a random SLM piece by landing on the nerkmid symbol. Learn more about this here.
  • The Anchor Management gives away Forgotten Shore Map pieces quite often.
  • Playing Scorchy Slots can award you one or three Treasure Map Pieces.
  • Sometimes Tarla decides to give out Treasure Maps and Secret Laboratory Maps.

Where do I go to assemble my map?

Neopets Treasure Hunt

To assemble a map you need to have the nine pieces in your inventory. Each one has different purposes and prizes. After assembling the map, all the nine pieces disappear from your inventory..

Once you them in your inventory, go to the Neopets Treasure Hunt page and select the map that you are going to assemble. There are seven kind of maps:.

  • Original Map*
    (also known as Treasure Map)
  • Spooky Map*
  • Underwater Map*
  • Secret Laboratory Map
  • Space Map*
  • Petpet Laboratory Map
  • Forgotten Shore

Maps marked with an asterisk [*] won't give you permanent access, once you have assembled them and claimed your prize, the access disappears, you would need to buy them again.

World Challenge Maps

WC maps work in a different way, you don't need to have the 20 pieces in your inventory to convert them, you can add or remove a piece from your gallery as soon you have it. Once you have converted the map, it can't be reused..

They are separated by worlds (listed below), each world has three sets of maps.

  • Kreludor
  • Neopia Central
  • Haunted Woods
  • Lost Desert
  • Faerieland
  • Krawk Island
  • Mystery Island
  • Virtupets Space Station
  • Meridell
  • Tyrannia
  • Terror Mountain
  • Maraqua

To add or remove pieces from your gallery go to the World Challenge page and click on My Gallery below the name of each world.

You have to convert each set in order, this means you can't convert set three before converting set two, nor convert set two before converting set one..

Can the Lab Ray paint my pet any color?

This is a good question, not every color is obtainable by using the Lab Ray. However there are certain colors that are exclusive, that means you can't get them in any other way, with a few exceptions.

Exclusive Colors

  • Alien (only available for Aishas)
  • Chocolate
  • Clay (only available for Jubjubs and Kikos)
  • Coconut (only available for Jubjubs)
  • Custard
  • Fruit and Vegetables (only available for Chias, Chokato is also available for Kikos)
  • Garlic (only available for Jubjubs and Kikos)
  • Ice* (Ice Bori is an exception)
  • Jelly
  • Mallow (only available for Grundos)
  • MSP* (only available for Poogles)
  • Robot*
  • Snot
  • Sponge*

NOTE: The only way to get an Ice Bori was by participating in "special offer", read about this on the NT editorial issue #288, 8th question.

Impossible Colors

  • Baby
  • Magma*
  • Pirate
  • Plushie
  • Quiguki*
  • Royal*
  • Usuki*

Colors denoted with an asterisk [*] are not available by using the Rainbow Fountain.

The Trading Post isn't displaying any piece, how do I fix it?

I could not find any lots fitting that description!.

This is a very common issue and I don't know why TNT has not fixed this yet. It happens when you are searching for the Secret Laboratory Map and the Petpet Laboratory Map on the Trading Post.

It might be because every map piece has the same name, but the strange thing is that this doesn't affect all the maps.

There is an easy and quick way to fix it, as simple as choosing Newest, Random or Oldest.

Note that if you choose Identical to my phrase the Trading Post will only display lots that include piece number one. This also happens to every other treasure map.

Repeated pieces on a single lot, is this considered scamming?

I've known a lot of cases where people make an offer on a lot (thinking it is a full set) and when the offer is accepted, the buyer realizes that there are missing pieces, and the common question is, Can I report the seller for scamming?.

Well, we have two cases:.

Case 1: Let's say, hypothetically, I want to buy a full map set. I start searching on the Trading Post and I find a perfect deal, then I make my offer and I wait for a few minutes. Then the user accepts my offer. I, excitedly, run to complete my map at the Treasure Hunt page, but not all the pieces are there. I go to my inventory and I realize that there are missing (or repeated) pieces, now I lost most of my neopoints.

In this case the fault is mine for not checking my offer twice. After you make an offer on the Trading Post, make sure to check your offer two times in case you offered the wrong amount.

Case 2: Let's say, I want to buy my first Secret Laboratory Map to get the access to the Lab Ray. I have the neopoints ready to make an offer. I am searching on the Trading Post and I see a perfect deal, on the wishlist the seller claims that it is a full set. I make my offer and then I wait for a few minutes, the offer is accepted and then I run to complete my map. I realize that it isn't a full set.

Did you see the difference? In the case two it isn't my fault because the seller stated that it was a full set (even if I did't double-checked my offer still it isn't my fault). In this case I can report them for scamming. Just keep in mind that it could've been a mistake. I suggest to mail, kindly, the seller asking for a refund before reporting them. After all, we're all humans.

Reporting a user for scamming doesn't guarantee TNT will give you your items and neopoints back.

Can I use the Lab Ray in more than one account?

Short answer: Yes, that is totally fine.

Long (and detailed) answer:.

You are allowed to have up to five active accounts, including your main account. You can only use one of them as your main.

TNT has stated several times that it is against the rules to "do your dailies" on your side accounts. This is because most of them can give you neopoints and items. Doing your dailies on every single account you have unbalances the game, and surely you will be frozen.

There are a few exceptions, these are the Lab Ray and the Petpet Lab Ray. Even if they give you some neopoints when you complete them, it is fine because the complete map costs a lot more than the reward itself.

You can't complete any other treasure or world challenge map on your side accounts.

Can I share my Lab Ray?

There are two cases:.

Case 1: Lets say, hipothetically, a good friend of mine really wants to get access to the Lab Ray, but my friend is really poor and it isn't very good at making neopoints, so I kindly decide to share my Lab Ray. My friend gives me its pet and then I zap it.

Case 2: Lets say, I already got all my dream pets, and I have the access to the Lab Ray, but I don't want to zap any of my pets, then I look for abandoned pets, in the pound of course. I adopt them to start zapping them until they turn into a nicer color.

In both cases it is a nice gesture of mine, but there is a big difference. In case 1, my "imaginary friend" should get the access to the Secret Laboratory by its own (of course I can help my "friend" with some neopoints, or even gift him the complete Secret Laboratory Map). I can not really share the Lab Ray with another person. In case 2 I am not sharing it with anyone, I'm just adopting pets to make them look nicer so it can get the attention it deserves.

This is very similar to "gifting" a Fountain Faerie Quest, it is against the rules to share it with someone else.

Can I reuse the Secret Laboratory Map?

No, once you assemble the nine pieces, they disappear from your inventory. Read more about this on:.

How can I get the Mad Scientist as a Battledome challenger? Can he change my pet's gender?

You can get the Lab Ray Scientist as a battledome challenger by refresing the pet selection page. Like any other random event, it may take a long time.

One of the weapons used by The Lab Ray Scientist is the Strange Potion, when it is used against a pet, it will change its gender.

Battling the Mad Scientist is the most common way to change a pet's gender because it is a lot cheaper than a Strange Potion.

Difficulty: 185 | Starting HP: 200
So you want to fight?

NOTE: There's a difference between using the lab ray and battling the mad scientist to change the gender of a royal pet. I the lab ray changes the gender of any royal pet it will give it the appearance and clothes of the opposite genre, whereas battling the mad scientist (or using a strange potion on your pet) won't give you neither the clothes nor the appearance, it only changes your pet's eyes. Read more about this on Paint Brush Clothing Guide (section "Royals and the Lab Ray").

Is it worth getting the Secret Laboratory Map?

It is likely that the people that ask this is because they are unsure or they don't fully know how the Lab Ray works.

You have to keep one thing in mind, it depends on the use you are going to give to it. The people who already have access to the Secret Laboratory will tell you that they zap their pets to train them or to get a color or species change until they like how the pet looks. This is the main reason for the people to buy a Secret Laboratory Map.

One of the most common uses people gives to the Lab Ray is to train their pets. There are proofs that if you zap a pet for a long time, some its stats will increase, while other stats will decrease, unballancing its stats. Uneven stats make pets, eventually, harder to train. Don't train your pet while you are zapping it, it would be frustrating if you come across with a goes down to level one or another stat decreaser zap.

Another common use is to get a nicely painted pet. People usually adopt or create well named pets to zap them until they get a good color change, then they can trade it, adopt it out or keep it as a permie.

My suggestion is, think it rwice before buying the Secret Laboratory Map, you might not like to spend thousands on buying it and then have no use for it.

What is the Lab Ray Fortune Cookie?

It is a NC item that allows you to gain up to three extra zaps per day for a period of seven days. It comes in limited quantity and costs 125 NC. You can only use the fortune cookies on your main account.

What will your fortune be?
