Welcome

A crisp chilly wind plays against your cheek attempting to get your attention. With a slight shiver, you ignore the wind and seek solace under the juniper tree. Glancing around the scenery to enjoy the view the wind finally catches your attention. It sweeps through the leaves gathering them up and letting them slowly dance to the ground. The sound of your laughter fills the area as you enjoy the delightful show. Upon hearing this laughter, the juniper tree pulls you in to show the wonders of its world.

Welcome to Juniper- a guild review site by Alli. This site focuses on quality reviews to help guild owners peek at their guild through a viewer's eyes.

July 14, 2013

It has been quite hectic lately, and I find that I have no time for even being online_ Therefore, I will be placing Juniper on hiatus till the end of summer. I may do reviews during this hiatus if time allows.

Juniper will be back in the fall, that is a promise as we are not closing.

Juniper Sapling

Our 'tree' special! This special little sapling consists of things a viewer sees and thinks when looking at a guild. This sapling is recommended for guilds that are established yet still are in their new stage; also recommended for chat-based guilds and role playing guilds. *A point system is used.

First Impression 5/5 : When you advertise your guild, that first impression a viewer will make of your guild can either give the guild a lovely new member, or they will cross the guild off as a potential guild home. The layouts and content must capture your audience.

Layout(s) 15/15 : Layouts are the image of the guild. It conveys a story and a visual aspect to the guild. The layout should be well organized and easy to navigate. An organized layout will make even a simple template layout feel and appear much more professional. Is the CSS of the layout complementary or take away from it? A layout image or even a premade layout can appear less if the CSS is plain. CSS can add that extra element to a layout that makes everything come together and create a great first impression for viewers. Is there any broken links, misplaced coding, or areas that are not user friendly? Layouts should be checked regularly for such things to keep everything looking and running as smooth as possible.

An Inside View 20/20 : What your guild has to offer members? Does your guild have enough information about the guild to entice potential members? Activities and unique events keep members interested in their guild, and allow them to have fun. A guild is a community, and every guild should want to keep their community happy and fulfilled in their guild home.

Creativity 10/10 : How creative is your guild with its theme? Is your guild combining new techniques in their layouts? Is your guild unique with its activities? This section is how well your guild portrays the theme.

Redwood Sapling

This sapling is well known for reaching staggering heights. The Redwood Sapling will search high and low to give an in-depth review on important aspects of a guild. This sapling is recommended for established guilds one month or older. *A point system is used.

Activeness 10/10 : A guild should have active members. Active members can help out the "new guys" find their feet. It also keeps the guild jumping and alive.

Overall Appeal 20/20 : Viewing the guild as a whole component, how does everything come together to create a solid guild? Are there areas that could be improved upon, or additional content added to further enhance the guild?

Questions regarding the guild will be asked to a few members to gather valuable insight in a member's perspective of the guild. This can be used as a tool for guild leaders to better enhance the guild as the member's input will be coupled with an in-depth review from a viewer's perspective. These questions will only focus on what the member enjoys, ideas that they may have for improvement, and anything else that would pertain to helping their guild home.

Pine Sapling

This sapling is known for its understated appeal. The Pine Sapling is geared for new or up and coming guilds- one week or less.

Instead of looking at every detail of a guild, the pine sapling review will look at the big picture and major details that make up a guild. This consists of layouts, layout functionality, and the content as a whole.

Layouts : Layouts are the image of the guild. It conveys a story and a visual aspect to the guild.

Organization : Organization and functionality of a guild makes everything easier to navigate and enjoy.

Content : While layouts can garner interest, content can turn that interest into a new member. Information of the guild and what is offered is just as important when making a first impression.

This is a no score review and is merely a tool for new guilds to see their guild from a viewer's standpoint; as well as what they are doing well and what could possibly be improved upon.

Koa Sapling

This sapling is quite simple and beautiful. It states what a guild is doing right and what a guild could improve upon. This sapling is recommended for all guilds.

For Example:
Insert guild name has excellent organization. This will allow members and visitors alike to easily find what they are seeking.

Insert guild name had a few grammar mistakes on a few pages. Reading through the content at least bi-weekly will make sure small mistakes are caught.

Shaymin City

Areas the Guild Shines In

The guild layout is set up quite nicely and utilizes bright colors that pop against the sky blue background.

Links and guild title are easily found on the guild him page.

The Shaymin theme throughout the guild pages is a nice touch that creates a visual link to the name and the integral topic of the guild.

Rules and the ranks are easily understood.

It is great that the council is so readily available to members and visitors. This allows easy access in case someone has a question or comment.

The current CSS used employed in the web layout really adds to the layout. It would be nice to see it used more throughout the text, but excellent job in bolding important areas of the guild information.

The humor used in the web information makes it fun to read and encourages visitors to explore what this guild has to offer.

Areas the Guild Could Improve Upon

On the guild home page, the second header's font is way too small. Increase the font size will allow that header to be read and will prevent people from squinting their eyes.

The size of the font and the alignment look a bit unprofessional on the guild web. A size 10pt font will make the text look more "appealing" to read.

The coding for the web layout is a bit odd. There was a few issues with the anchors spilling into other pages, and a universal center was applied to the layout. Provided below is an updated code with the few areas mention resolved as well as aligning the main text to the left.

On the screen used to review the guild, the links are cut off on the web layout. A suggestion would be to move the links over the the left or move the content + links just a tad to the left.

The plot itself feels like a short story where the end already came. A visitor may not see where this plot will lead them. A suggestion would be to add a cliffhanger or add more details to the current plot paragraph to give more substance.

Comments : Shaymin has some lovely interfaces and the humor make this guild appealing. The plot as well as the mechanics of how members will role-play need to be touched up or added to alleviate future questions. Overall, this guild is off to a nice new beginning.

Guild Informtaion│Guild is Private

First Impression: 5/5

A stellar first impressions as visitors are greeted with warm inviting colors and fascinating details sprinkled throughout the visitor page. The stark black background of the content does stand out and draws the eye in, but the color adds a harsh element that could be reduced. It is great to see that all a future member have all the required information concerning Wistful and more readily available on the "Apply" page. All the elements of this page make for a great impression and it draws the visitor in.

Layouts: 12/15

As aforementioned, the black content background on the information page is a bit contrasting. Perhaps reduce the opacity of this background to mellow out this element. The black against such light colors reads quite harsh on the screen and takes away from such a gorgeous and well executed layout.

The website layout is well executed and the color scheme is pleasing to the eye. Using the leaf baroque adds a nice touch of eloquence. A small quibble with this layout is the cutting off of words in a few select areas of the guild; the "welcome wistfuleans" and "petpage, made by sosu". It takes away from that section of the layout and it looks quite messy whereas the rest of the layout has a clear and precise distinction.

The portal layout is a nice reminiscent of Spring with soft corals and light turquoise blues. Well done.

The activities page has a lovely color scheme and the colorization of the image melds well with the dominate cream color. However the execution of the main blended image is poorly done. Whereas in other similarly styled layouts, the placement of each "image" adds to the whimsy and technical appeal, this layout does not hold the same allure. The left of the content and the bottom of the content area, as well as the border around the content look out of place with the rest of the layout.

In the member page for Wistful, the light grey color of text include in the title and main heading of the page disappear when next to bright vibrant colors. Darkening that grey slightly will allow those grey letters to be seen much more readily. Using such a light grey color for the main text makes it harder to read when using a white background. Again, darkening the grey color will allow the text to be more visible and earlier to read. Another small issue is the text is much to flush to the scrollbar in the newbie guide section and is in need of padding.

In the points and prizes page, a back button is needed in each of the prize explanation. Having a back button on each of the prize details will make this page more user friendly. In the graphic request area of this page, a link to each graphic maker's user lookup will make sending in the forms much easier than exiting out of the page and then going to the user page. The portfolio link of Sosu's leads to a message rather than a portfolio-perhaps remove the link as your graphic work is showcased throughout the guild as well as your personal site.

In the badges page, the small banner really packs quite an impression with so many little details to capture the eye. However, the striped background is rather distracting and draws the viewer's eye to that rather than the information and "main" focal point. Using a light colored striped background instead of one so similar colored to the main scheme would not take away from the main focal areas.

The adoptions page looks as if it was put together in a hurry. The main image is adorable, but the elements of the layout look very out of place. The red color font grabs the attention but does not go hand in hand with pinks and blues that dominate the image. A suggestion would be to replace that red with a more red-based pink.

The account and bloc pages are no longer available and the links to each page on the portal lead to a basic Neopet petpage. A suggestion would be to remove these links till the pages are back up and running.

Wistful really drives on making a bold impression to all who grace a visit to the many areas of the guild. Some of the elements included in a few layouts took away from the layout as a whole, but most really capture the viewer and draw them in. Well done.

An Inside View: 17/20

Wistful offers a plethora of things for its members, and each area is well organized. The detail to making each section easy to understand will ensure everyone may enjoy this guild to the full potential. There are a few sections that could be placed together to cut back on the vast amount of updating, and because these sections go hand and hand. The prizes and badge page both reward the member for various guild things as well as motivate them in all areas of the guild. Having these two pages together makes it easier to view similar information. Another area that could be placed together is the Dream Pet and Adoption page. Both revolve around the idea of trading, adopting, and gifting pets. Having two separate pages for these areas does not make logical sense.

Having a custom graphic made by talented graphic designers is very motivational to be active and earn points. The page hosting this information is quite detailed, but there are areas that may be confusing to members. The introduction to this page states that each graphic has its own requirements, but none are to be found besides the point cost. In the rules and regulation section it states that each requestee must follow the graphic makers rules, but how are member suppose to follow each graphic makers rules if none are to be found on this page? Are they required to mail them? Another tidbit in the rules and regulations page is asking members to check beforehand if the graphic makers have open requests. Perhaps having an open/closed request sign for each graphic maker will reduce the amount of mail and make the process much easier for both the member and the graphic maker.

The member directory is very well done. Instead of having a small statement from each member, this page encompasses a variety of information about each member that directly relate to the guild. Member can learn about each other on a more personal note through the guild board and interacting on common interests.

On the guild graphics page, it is nice to see a nice selection of guild pride. When members are wanting to create and submit a graphic, instead of mailing you about the correct dimensions for each graphic area, perhaps include this information on the page.

The guild stuff page is a nice collection of interesting tidbits and guild information. Each section is well updated with the exception of the guild events. Each event is missing information and is essentially a blank section(s) of the page. It would be a nice way for new members to read up on past events and create some excitement for future events if they had an idea of what to expect.

The guild bloc and account pages seems like they would be excellent areas of interest, but sadly nothing is available.

What a great collection of activities, motivation rewards, memories, and fun tidbits for the Wistfuleans.

Creativity: 10/10

From the graphics to the personal graphic requests as a point system reward, Wistful really pack a visual punch. It is quite a standout and really sets this guild a part for making a great impression on those who visit.

Ownership: 20/20

Sosu is a well known person of interest throughout many Neopet communities. In all aspects that this owner of Wistful is involved with, it is done with professionalism and great attention to detail. Wistful is constantly updated and members will always have the latest guild news regarding every detail. It is great to see that you are very accessible to the members and are constantly interacting with them. Great job!

Activeness: 10/10

With member sweeps, keeping tabs on members who have gone inactive for a spell, to the insane amount of chatter- this guild runs like a well oiled machine. Wistful is consistently updated and members are very chatty and active in all aspects of the guild. The board moves at an excellent pace and conversations vary from interest to interest-hardly a dull moment.

Overall Appeal: 19/20

Wistful is well organized and offers activities and rewards for the members of this guild. What really sets this guild apart is not the amazing rewards or fun activities, it is making a community of this guild with all those interesting pages and conversation on the boards. This guild is a member driven guild-not just one in power calling the shots.

A few pages are in need of more information, but what is offered is nice motivation for members to remain active and continue broadening the Wistful community.

District 13
Hunger Games Themed Guild

Guild InformtaionGuild is Public

First Impression: 3/5

The images on the web and guild home looked stretched, which can give an unprofessional appearance to the layout as a whole. When a visitor reads up on the provided information, they are greeted with blocks of text without any CSS to point them to important areas, as well as break up the monotony of the text. The information about District 13 is brief, but a visitor will leave with a small understanding of the guild. However, there are questions that may come up when reading up on the guild and those potential questions are not addressed in the brief summary provided on the web.

Layouts: 10/15

On the guild web page, the banner looks quite stretched and it does not really capture the visitors attention. The wording is very small and squished which gives the illusion that the image on a whole is quite stretched. One way to accommodate the wording without having it squished inside a small image is to use white colored font and reduces the opacity so that the text is slightly hidden, but still visible. This method will allow the font to be bigger without taking away from the image itself. The CSS of the web page does not quite suit the sullen and emotion driven banner-lilac colors are more suited for a pastel theme. On the banner, the Hunger Game characters Cinna and Effie provide dark rich colors that can be utilized in the CSS to provide a visual link back to the banner. Some of the colors provided from the image are: 002936, 1b5874, and 84214d. These colors would be best served in the headers, links, and text effects (bold/italic will help draw the viewers attention throughout the text).

The guild home page uses a blend and blog styled layout. A large and prominent image on the blend is quite blurry, while the image to the left of it is just as prominent but a more crisp image. When making a blended image, try to use clear and non blurry images as this will give the blend a more finished look. The CSS used in this layout does utilize colors from the images, however the colors used are quite dark and blend into the image. A suggestion would be to play with shades of green, but brighten them so that they are readable. The text in the content area is a bit flushed against the left edge and would benefit from adding padding in the div tags.

The activities page's background is distracting with the molten colors and visible lines of the repeating background. A more subtle patten or background would add a textural element without being overly distracting to the viewer.

An Inside View: 14/20

In the main information area, it is important to have all the basic details concerning the guild available for interested visitors and current members. When introducing the guild and briefly mentioning what information a viewer will find on this page, it is vital that one delivers. What is missing from this main page is the goals and what members can expect from this guild. Tell the visitors more about your games, activities, plans for the guild, pieces of information that will allow the viewers to get a better representation of the guild.

The guild Hunger Games is an exciting and fun activity for members to participate in as this is an integral plot pieces to the Hunger Games series. The information about District 13's hunger games is quite vague and should be more detailed. Providing information on how the games will work, the time line of the games, etc, will make the transition of getting the activity up and running much smoother. The activities, theme, and how eliminations will happen are fine to keep hidden, but the basic details are needed.

Great job on keeping with the Hunger Games theme with the guild activities. It is a nice way to contribute to the game and a fun way to pass the time.

Creativity: 10/10

District 13 really immerses themselves with the Hunger Games theme from the layouts to the activities, well done!
